Also, keep in mind that when you're working on your own tunes, where you have access to the inner guts of each track, the mixing phase is a lot more important than the mastering phase for getting your song to sound good. When you are able to get transient shapers, compressors, etc. on individual drum hits and other elements before bouncing out the track stems for mastering, the mastering phase can simply involve a bit of saturation, gentle compression with low attack speed, a touch of EQ, and a limiter. When you're mastering someone else's stems is when mastering becomes a lot more involved.
What I'm saying is, mix properly, get it to sound crisp and clean, and then work your mastering plugin chain to get it to maximize the sonic space you're given.
You should be mixing your tracks at low enough Dbs that the entire track peaks between -3 and -6 Db. Then, you can use your mastering chain to increase the volume and glue everything together cohesively.
