I'm not sure fog of war would play nicely with that type of game. You could prototype and take a look at how it works.

On the other hand, almost all ARPGs use the first approach. In Diablo II the towns weren't any big, just "functional" with no incentive to explore it, just talk to all the characters and that's it. If you want your player to explore the city maybe you could make it bigger or add some interactions with specific places in it.

I'd like to add, nice work Smiley Every time it's looking more interesting!

Hey there, I'm not sure if you already know this but you should check out GoF design patterns to help you structure better your OOP code and find a neat solution for this. It'll be worth the effort.

I think your update() method should call update() of other components to separate work otherwise you'll have just one monolithic update() method that could easily get out of hand.

I hope this helps Smiley

Definitely going to follow this devlog, I really want to see how it turns out. It seems very interesting so far Smiley
4  Community / Writing / Re: How do you name your characters? on: April 14, 2016, 03:01:55 PM
How about making up some names by mixing traits of the character or things they like?

Imagine the character is a cute girl that loves chocolate: Chocolate + Cute + Girl = Cuchogi

Well, it's just an example of what I mean... not a good name per se haha
5  Community / Writing / Re: Could you help me with English for my Gamasutra article? on: April 14, 2016, 02:41:57 PM
Hey there! I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this but I'm going to give you a hand Smiley

First of all, great read and great English! I've seen games fall under a wave of negative feedback because bugs are not patched fast enough. Developers like Beamdog are having a tough time providing hotfixes and even though the bugs get fixed, eventually, the fans have to wait a lot (some months, yeah). Also, the demo is a good point. You need to own the game on Steam to write a review (right?) so if you play the demo and don't like it you will not buy the game and you will not write a bad review (not in your Steam game's page at least).

I'm not from an English speaking country so I hope someone else can comment on my suggestions for your article. I think you only have a typo and a couple of small errors Smiley

"Hey, long time no talk!" -> under this title, the first line of the paragraph says "at asmall dinner" but should say -> "at a small dinner"

Maybe the first sentence under the title "The Shock" could be written differently, it sounds a bit odd to me.

Instead of writing "The first time I saw the Subterain's review score" shouldn't it be "The first time I saw Subterain's review score"? I think you wrote it like this a couple of times (remove the "the" before "Subterain's").

"Pixellore is practically an one-man studio" -> "Pixellore is practically a one-man studio"

"play the demo in stead of saving" -> "play the demo instead of saving"

Hope this helps!! Smiley

EDIT: Your game's trailer made me laugh, I'll keep it on my radar Wink

I've never heard before of hacknplan, looks really interesting. I'll give it a better look.
7  Player / Games / Re: Looking for games with truly memorable stories on: April 14, 2016, 12:49:08 PM
I liked the Metal Gear Solid 1-3 stories a lot.
Some of the character quadruple-crossing still boggles my mind (won't spoil who).

I think that MGS has some solid story material, it got me every damn time haha.

I'd like to add Baldur's Gate to the mix, it's interesting to discover what really is going on. Baldur's Gate 2 has more character development IMO though and is also great story wise.

The original Deus Ex has a good story too. And Final Fantasy IV and VI too.

If you wanted to look to older games I think my job's done Wink

EDIT: I almost forgot! (shame) The Legacy of Kain series have excellent story and character development IMO.

You could use something like Simplenote. I'm writing down my ideas using that app, although maybe it's too simple for your needs. I was going to suggest a wiki too but you don't seem to like that idea too much.

i don't want to hijack this thread, but what software would you recommend for writing academic papers?

i wrote two papers in openoffice and it was an absolute pain both times. right now i'm in the middle of writing my thesis and im using openoffice AGAIN against my better judgement. it's still early enough to transfer my work to something else.

btw im using openoffice again against my better judgement. as long as you don't use tables it's fine.

Maybe try LibreOffice? Or avoid tables, that's working. Right?
10  Player / Games / Re: What are you playing? on: May 05, 2014, 06:59:53 AM
Playing Legacy of Kain: Blood Omen. It's really good, kind of like a dark Zelda game but with great voice acting (I love Kain's voice). Got all the Legacy of Kain games at Steam... Soul Reaver is supposed to be one of the best games ever (I read that quite a few times) and that got me into the series.

Also, playing AoE 2 online with friends. This is a game that is so well designed it's still being played. I think the reasons are obviously the gameplay and the fact that the graphics are old but don't suck (I love old games, nevermind).
11  Developer / Art / Re: GIFs of games being worked on on: April 05, 2014, 06:50:43 AM
This is the title screen to a game I'm working on for "10 shitty games", a 10 hour game jam

Looks weird xD The gif at your signature captured my eye. I like the graphic style a lot!

Newly updated version of the superweapon from my post on the first page.

O_O awesome... any potential Star Wars references? Tongue

Hello there!

I'm Necdilzor and the dream of my life is to make quality games extracted directly from my mind. I'm currently studying Computer Science (I'm on my second year, yay!) and my connection with computers come from when I was as little as 2, peeping into my dad's office and watching him using the computer.

When I was 8 and played Little Big Adventure 2 (Twinsen's Odyssey) I fell in love with video games. I guess that the fact that I fantasized a lot about that game made me want to make games. Rayman (the original) is another game that I played in that time that felt just like pure magic to me.

I've made some games with Game Maker 7 when I was like 13 but they all sucked hahaha. I also have a modding project for Little Big Adventure (Relentless) but it's currently on hiatus and I'm definitely going to pick it up again.

In the near future I'd like to make little video games and eventually have enough skill to make the more ambitious ones I have on my mind. Smiley

I'm looking forth to be a part of this community!!
13  Community / Writing / Re: Dialog "slowly appearing" text vs instantaneous text. on: March 30, 2014, 06:07:53 PM
The typewriter effect can help to add drama and set the pace of the dialogs, generating a more absorbing experience in my opinion. I believe that if you want to add this effect you should make it so that pressing a button increases the speed so you don't accidentally skip a line.

Also give the option for instantaneous text. In some occasions or for some people, this effect can be annoying.
