Have you played titles like Adventures of Lolo? They aren't platformers but they have great ideas for how to implement enemies to be involved in cool puzzles. And all of those puzzles really do give you that "I'm awesome" feeling once you solve them. I also hate games where you have to spam over and over hoping for success (Candy Crush).

Is anyone else slightly creeped out by the child-like sprites with their giant smiles while they murder everything in sight?

"Hi, mister. It's nice to meet you. I'm going to murder you now. Have a good day."

The game looks super fun though.

Next up is a menu. I'll be working on quest implementation first but I still wanted to make sure I knew what skills and such I wanted in the game. Designing a character sheet shouldn't be too difficult anyways. I'm thinking up basic layout ideas and then I'll have my graphic designer improve on them when she has time. The basic idea:

Hello everyone. I'm working on a 2D open world cyberpunk action rpg. It's going to be some strange fusion of Shadowrun (Genesis/Megadrive), Shadowrun SNES, Deus Ex, and Fallout 2. I have a chunk of the story and design complete and I'm working on implementing some of the concepts while I improve at GML. I recently found out about TIGSource devlog area so I thought I'd just set this here instead of just using google docs as a devlog.

I have a talented graphic artist working with me.

I legit purchased some cool looking RPG Maker tilesets which are a pain to get working outside of RPG Maker. Other graphics are from opengameart or are just placeholders. I don't really have thousands of dollars sitting around to pay an artist to work on something of this scope. Once the demo is done, maybe I can find some talented artists who'll be interested.

I have the dialogue system almost complete. I think it's pretty well set up for a game maker title. The game is going to be very dialogue heavy with many NPCs. I aim to achieve the level of sophistication seen in games like Fallout 2, Morrowind and Planescape: Torment. The NPCs will react to different things the player has done in the world and said to that NPC. Abilities and high stats can also unlock new dialogue options. The dialogue system is prepared for this. Rather than a full dialogue tree system, it's more similar to Morrowind where you have a list of things to choose from. Choosing these items can make options disappear and make new options appear. But the traditional dialogue tree system is also supported.

The combat system I'm thinking of having a cross between Shadowrun on the SNES and something similar to Fallout 3 VATS where you can pause and use a special skill or item. I'm not 100% sure yet. I just need it to be fun. I currently have it set up to where you can press a button to go into combat mode which makes a crosshair appear. You can then aim it and fire. I also have a button that spawns an enemy to play with. Line of sight is also implemented but I need to set up a secondary blocked item type so the player can shoot over things like chairs and trashcans.

I'm still building the demo area but I at least have a base area with everything filled in and an idea of what everything is and where everything will go. There's only a couple of spots I need to completely change.

I'm thinking of focusing heavily on scripted battles and random encounters. The open world and random encounters aspects will be similar to Shadowrun on the Sega Genesis. One example from Shadowrun is where a strange man will suddenly try and convince you to buy (illegal) frag grenades from him at a super discounted price. This could be a legit offer or it could be an undercover Lone Star officer. I want to take this system and expand on it greatly.

There will also be a completely separate combat system for hacking and corporate invasion missions that I hope to make more similar to Deus Ex.

If I can finish my demo and have all of the core gameplay mechanics implemented, I'll start a Kickstarter. That's my goal. I'll share some of the story a little later. Thanks for looking.
