Hello everyone,

There's been several new updates for Malebolgia since it went live on Steam Early Access about a month ago. Feedback is very positive and encouraging so far.

Progress is going very well and feedback from beta-testing is positive. I plan to contact press and video Let's Players during the next two weeks, in anticipation of the Steam Early Access release early December.

But I have to ask, is the combat like Dark Souls? Is it really an influence?
Yes, it is certainly an influence.

It's definitely not as "good", in the sense that it doesn't have near the same depth in attacks, movements, enemy types and character customization (weaponry, armor, stats, etc.).

If anything, it's a bit of a Dark Souls-lite. Like picking a pure melee character with only a halberd.

I'm pleased to update with the following news:
- I have submitted a demo of Malebolgia to the Independent Games Festival. *fingers crossed*
- I have created a little Tumblr site: http://malebolgia-game.tumblr.com/
- And next to some new screenshots on that site, I have also made a teaser trailer:

Enjoy!

Start screen of Malebolgia. Subject to change (like adding in an Options menu).

PS: I realize your game is completely different than Killer 7. But ever since I played Killer 7, I get reminded to the game once and a while.
That's OK given that Killer7 is one of my favourite games of all time and its visuals certainly are an inspiration on how to handle low-poly cel-shading.

Thanks for the kind words.

@ephoete: That's why I plan to have an adjustable gamma/brightness setting. I want the game to be dark, but it would suck for players to not see anything due to a different monitor configuration.

I haven't posted these in here yet:

Some combat shots.

Here's one for Malebolgia:

It's a quick shot of the combat with a basic enemy, the ghoul. He does his lunging attack, player does a backdash out of it and then a three-hit combo to kill the enemy.

Novel and fun concept. Good luck with this!

A new one for #screenshotsaturday:

Shot of the exterior. Also, here's an actual look at the model in SketchUp:

One of the enemies of the game. It's a gargoyle/demon based on the Malebranche from the Inferno. They've got several attacks: stabs and swipes with their pitchfork, fireballs and a jumping attack.

The exterior of the palace needs a decent bit of work. It's very empty right now, so I've decided to try adding some trees with Unity's terrain engine.

MALEBOLGIA

Hello everyone. I'd like to introduce here Malebolgia. It is a cel-shaded horror action/adventure game that I have been working on for the past year and a half, in my spare time. You may have seen it already on #screenshotsaturday, Steam Greenlight or other sites.

Development has been progressing quite nicely, with the majority of the game's content being done. The focus right now is finishing up some areas, polishing animation/sound and testing the gameplay balance.

On the game itself, Malebolgia takes place in a large classical palace, at the edge of the ice lake Cocytus in Hell. It is the dominion of a hierarchy of demons and devils, and the player, old Leopold, is trapped inside. He only vaguely remembers how he arrived there, and soon meets the other denizens of the palace, some familiar, some not.

Some key design points:
- Passage of time: New areas of the palace will open up for exploration as time goes on. NPCs will change locations and dialogue. Rooms that were once empty will be inhabited by monsters.
- Combat: The game features a focus on actual combat with the enemies. The player is armed with a large halberd and can perform several attacks or dodge moves. There are a lot of enemy types and almost a dozen boss monsters to defeat, from humanoid creatures to large beasts.
- Historical setting: The palace is a cold and desolate place, situated in the lower Circle of Hell. Characters and story are inspired by Dante Alighieri's Inferno, the ranks and nobility of the Ars Goetia and European history at the dawn of the 20th century.

Here are some screenshots:

I'll try to keep this thread updated with my progress and new media from time to time.
