Gorgeous lighting, especially the sunlight. But when it moves, it really shows off the 3-dimensional nature of the backdrops.

You know what else causes light beside bioluminescence and sunshine?

Fire.

Heathen! This is RAIN world! On a serious note, are there any plans for this?

I think another useful move would be, when in a vertical tunnel, being able to press "jump" and drop to the bottom. Would give an advantage over lizards pursuing you through tight areas

I'm talking about passages like this:

I like this idea. Very subtle, but also very handy. Those who think that the slugcat is slimy, if this gets added it justifies your theory. Smiley

oh, that reminds me.

@James and Joar, how is it going at PAX? Any footage we can see?  Well, hello there!

2) Further use with Lizards, if a Lizard is dead, then pressing C would have slugcat grab the limp body with both arms and slowly, but effectively, move the body a few lizard-lengths, before tiring out.
----I know we currently can 'walk' into a dead Lizard body and it will nudge until it hits a wall, but in my case up above I really wish I had a way of moving the body to get the tail out of the tunnel.

3) Pressing C, while being covered in many leeches, would claw at/wipe off leeches while underwater, giving you a slight chance of getting out of the water alive, though still out of breath.

Just my two cents. Am definitely wondering what your guys' thoughts on are on this, especially the Alpha players right now.

I don't really like the idea of number 3. I think the idea of the leeches being extremely deadly is epic. Besides, you can't possibly have the coordination, (even as a slugcat), to both claw them off AND swim while in the water. I do like the "C" key as a hand, (paw?) action however. The "spear stab" is a good idea, you have no idea how much I have wanted to do this.

Regarding paw swipes, I wish lizards used their feet offensively, rather than only biting and thrashing. Like when lizards are fighting dominance, would be cool to see them clawing at eachother. Or a lizard clawing at a vulture when it's held in the vuiture's mandibles

I don't really see this. If they are like crocodiles, then I would imagine that their main weapons are their jaws and head. Their legs aren't really long enough to be a primary weapon. It would be nice as a side addition, say for lizard vs. lizard fights.

Something with multiple eyes sounds nice. Not sure about the angler idea. Maybe have bioluminescent plants; something you could pick and carry with you like a lamp. Possibly the creature that inhabits this realm could be momentarily "stunned" by the light, offering some kind of defense to you? Also, maybe some kind of restriction on carrying the plant above ground; it dies when exposed to daylight? The creature could be light sensitive as well. Catacombs sounds like a good idea, maybe have strange dysfunctional machines laying around. Maybe even some neon lights that still work.

While im on the subject, you guys already have a "suburban" region. Any plans for an "urban" one? I.e., skyscrapers? That could be a good place for most of the creatures to come Into contact.
46  Community / DevLogs / Re: Project Rain World on: March 06, 2015, 10:21:03 AM
I have a question/suggestion. Can you hunt leeches with a spear? If you can't already, I think that would be a neat addition.

Leech sushi!

Also, @Christian, I like the idea of the rain not being seen. Part of my draw to rain world is the raw emotional attachment to it. The rain is something that will kill you, and when it does it will be very dark. Then you will be in intense pain, and then you will be dead. Again, wholeheartedly agree with and support this idea.

The vulture being able to fit into vents makes absolutely no sense to me. It is an apex predator, and on top of that it can go wherever you go, even the den. Beyond the blatant breaking of the laws of physics, I think this is unfair.

Anyway, just my 2.5 cents for the day.

Read through the first few pages again and it really is impressive how the game has evolved from this

to this

And to think, the game looks even more impressive now with the unique lizards
We need another lizard fight GIF for comparison  Well, hello there!

Also really impressive how true you guys have stayed to the original concept. It's been almost three years. I've seen projects take a hiatus and come back a few months later with a new focus or a new direction and whatnot. And here, from the get-go, it was all about animations and AI and the industrial environment and stealth.

Edit: James, I just saw your comment on YouTube about the teaser trailer music being from the game's soundtrack. Now I'm very happy that the digital soundtrack was part of the KS tier. I don't often listen to game soundtracks, save for Crypt of the NecroDancer and Hotline Miami, but I really liked that brief preview of Rain World's music

Where is that bottom GIF coming from? I don't remember seeing it. Is that current gameplay? (I haven't played yet. Been prolonging satisfaction... JUST YOU WAIT WEEKEND!)

When will the VR version out Well, hello there!

I think that it was mentioned before, some several dozen pages ago. If I recall, it was that it would be pointless, seeing as Rain World is a 2d side scroller. Then again, I think that either James or Joar mentioned that it was a bunch of levels  on top of each other, (anyone remember that GIF?), so you could move them independently to create the illusion of depth. That could be fun in VR. Smiley

I noticed some complaints about the GIFs lagging peoples commuters. I have to say I have had this issue, and mine is fairly new. Might want to fix this somehow, maybe have a "spoiler tag"?

^^^To add to your ideas, perhaps each lizard species could have a unique fight for dominance that revolves around their unique traits.

- A blue lizard fight would involve a kind of tug of war with their tongues, like how bears wrestle
- The white lizards could use their camouflage skill to flash bright colors at rivals, like peacocks showing off their feathers.
- Greens would charge at each other and test their strength by head-butting , like how mountain goats lock horns

I particularly like the head butting idea for the greens...

You're not mocking us, are you?  Cheesy

On the subject of streaming - as you say, very risky. If everything goes well, it could be a really cool way of reaching people. If there's some hiccup in the game that makes the streamer lose in some unfair way or something like that, that small little random occurrence could become a big problem. We'd have to be very secure and confident with the stability of the game. And as you also mention, atmospheric exploration is maybe not the best streaming material. That said Rain World does have a zanier side to it when it comes to creature interactions, and that side is further accented in the sandbox mode which will soon come around.

As for Lingo features, pretty much all of it will make it! Though some things might morph a bit to go with the new and more refined aesthetic. The red bubbles I don't really know about though, haha... If they make it in they're going to look quite different!
The Bubbles have a page on the Wiki! They better make it in!! Tongue

So they do...

So, feature wise, I like what there is so far. When do you guys plan to get around to the nice orange and blue lighting like seen in the lingo alpha? Is this implemented yet? That was one of the things that really sold it for me. Also... waaaait for it... BRAIN TREE! Seriously, where is this thing? The plant life, man. And those red bubble things... Don't forget them.

tl:dr, what is making it in from the lingo build? Addicted
53  Community / DevLogs / Re: Project Rain World on: February 23, 2015, 05:23:12 PM
So guys. Oddball question here, but what are the odds of you putting up a download for the old alpha? Say, the one from the "slugcat life" video, or whatever it was prior to porting to unity. It may seem odd, but I kinda want to try it out, just to see how far its come. If not, do you think that there will be an option to play the old version in lingo when the game is finally released?
54  Community / DevLogs / Re: Project Rain World on: February 20, 2015, 10:23:19 PM
There will be a few more moves definitely, but not too many. The game should be about using a limited set of moves to maneuver creatively, not about memorizing a huge library.

Update 399

An old friend is back!

I have a decent implementation of the white lizard in now. The camouflage is working, and the different - way more passive - AI is running as well. Neither is top notch yet, but pretty functional.

I was thinking about doing the camouflage as some super high-tech shader, and I'm still considering an implementation like that, but... Actually I'm pretty fond of the flat color silhouette. It fits in with the art style better than shader madness, and actually it provides a pretty perfect amount of actual camouflage for gameplay purposes in my opinion. So, maybe I'll leave it like this for now at least.

For those of you who haven't read this devlog for years and years, the lizards come in different colors with some different traits. The white one is a chameleon that sits and waits instead of pursuing you.

Also, I never noticed till' now, but there is a slight atmospheric ripple effect, and the garbage is kind of slowly pulsating in different hues. The sheer level of detail you guys put into this...

This forum is the closest I will ever come to being religious. James and Joar, how do you DO this!? And dear god, what on earth is becoming of your social life!? All told, the best $25 I have ever spent.

Dear god... Waaagh!
57  Community / DevLogs / Re: Project Rain World on: February 10, 2015, 07:42:53 PM
When I heard that you guys would have an alpha ready for PAX east, and if it went well would release it after, I cried for joy. Tears of Joy

Looking good guys! Any ETA on another alpha? Nightly builds? *wink wink*

Dear god ye'all. Shut up! You are ruining my rain world experience! Seriously, acting like a bunch of immature gamers of something. *wink wink*.

Agreed. Also:

After some time, when the female is finally stimulated enough and she feels her body produced enough eggs (process takes between 4-12 hours, and can produce about 100-300 eggs), she takes one of her tentacles, wraps it around the male's head (cranial region) and tears it off-- the male is now dead.
The female reaches into her now-dead partner's body, scoops out his semen sack, and swallows it.
During the next week the female goes back to her normal life den, where she has prepared a stockpile of food reserves, and proceeds to eat all the food until it kills herself, literally.
After that week has passed, if the female has not died by natural causes, she will tear off her own head as to prevent her body from absorbing/processing her body to feed off itself to survive.

Also at the end of this first week, the Krikets* are about at a tadpole stage; and after a few more weeks of absorbing their mother's nutrients, they each will crawl/munch their way out of her body, spread their little Kriket wings, and fly to begin the cycle all over again.

Half of the Krickets will survive their first day outside. And only 10 out of the original 100 (30 out of 300) will live a full week outside the mother's body. Once more, half of those remaining will be dead by the end of the next week.

Between the moment of fertilization and 2 months later, 5% of the Krikets will be all that remain to continue the reign of Kraken everywhere.

*Technical Fact: Baby Krakens are called Krikets.
______________

I also have other ideas for the other creatures (except snails, though I can think of some pretty weird stuff on the top of my head huehuehue). Bats are whores (not a slur), they do everybody and everything. Slugcats are the tamest out of everything Tongue
I also have Fur Color hereditary charts for how popular each color of Slugcat is. Dominant/Recessive genes, that kind of stuff. It's all just so much fun! :D
