If I had this need I'd go to project gutenberg, grab a copy of King Arthur (or something similarly legendary) and chop the chapters in half, making each half chapter into an ingame whole book of a series.

Not sure from your dev log if this is a good or bad idea, but it's an idea, and possibly a fast solution.

Haha, that's definitely a clever solution. But I'm in no hurry, and I'd definitely prefer to have all original content for the game, even if it takes longer. Thanks for the idea though.

Sup guys,

So just a quick update since I haven't posted in a bit. I'm still in the writing stage and I'm hoping to finish by the end of this month. I've been getting some really good short story submissions so thanks again to everyone who contributed. I'll still be taking contributions up until the end of June.

If everything goes according to plan, I'm hoping to release this game by late July or early-mid August. But of course, nothing is set in stone.

Anyway, that's all for now Gentleman

Taking notes is an awesome idea. How do you re access them after jotting your thoughts down? Is there a special book on a shelf for them?

The way it's programmed right now, it's sort of just like a regular text box where you can type things. You press tab to bring it up and tab again to put it away, and whatever notes you write will stay there until you actually delete them. So you'll be able switch back and forth from looking at a book to jotting down notes. I'll probably add a function where you can save notes and access them later at the desk. Shouldn't take more than an hour or two to do now that I'm thinking about it.

Sounds very unique, good luck!
I love reading and this looks really cool; posting to follow

Thanks guys! I appreciate it!

I really like the simplicity of your scope. Looking forward to seeing it come together. I think the biggest challenge might be making the communication of the story clear enough for the player to get into without hitting immediate walls in puzzles. Will there be a demo release or are you waiting to get everything finished first?

Thanks! I'll probably just release the finished game.

Tell me a little bit about the backstory and lore or whatever.  If there's spoiler surprise stuff, you can PM me.

Sure thing. I'll edit the original post with more details about the game world when I get some time.

Looks cool, I like the concept. Will the entire game take place in that one location or will it branch out to different areas?

Thanks! The entire game does take place in that one location. Like I said, it's my first game so I wanted to keep it small. The books in the game (and your own mind) is where the bulk of the gameplay really takes place anyway.

Actually, the original plan was for this game to just be a prologue/demo/teaser for a larger game that would have taken place in an entire town, but after spending some time developing this "prologue", I found that one room full of bookshelves was all I really needed to explore the type of gameplay that I had in mind. So I decided to just make this its own game.

If people end up really liking it and wanting more, I'd definitely be open to making a sequel that takes place in a whole mansion or castle or something, so that there's more rooms to explore. But for now, I just wanna be able to have something out there that's its own complete thing, even if it's something small.

Sup everyone,

This is my first game which I've been developing for the past few months.
It's a pretty small game (the whole game takes place in one screen),
and it'll be completely free when I release it.
 Beer!

Basically, you play a scholar whose dead grandfather left him with a collection of mysterious books
that are either sealed (requiring a password to open) or unreadable in other ways.
And the goal is to find out what's in those books by solving a trail of puzzles/riddles.

It's a game that will involve a lot of reading and critical thinking.
I admit, it won't be for everyone, but hopefully some people enjoy it.

Here's some previews I put together:

You'll need to write notes when deciphering coded messages

I think it's generally poor form to solicit help for a project without really introducing yourself or your project at all, and I think that if you're actually after a productive working partnership you should share a bit more

lol yea dude, I'm just some guy sitting at home making games for free xD chillax

On the other hand, you did just use the words "solicit" and "productive working partnership" non-ironically, so I trust you know what you're talking about. I'll try to edit the original post with some screen shots and more details. Thanks for the tip, brotha-man!

And @autumnspark thanks for understanding what I was going for. I reciprocate your emote, good sir Beer!
Matter of fact, cheers to you too capntastic Beer! You seem like you could use a beer lol

@Capntastic

This is really good!

Like I said though, this isn't a game I'm looking to profit from or spend money making. This is a project I'm doing for fun.

Sorry to waste your time. Would have loved to use this story.

But thanks anyway! Good day to you Gentleman

Hey there freak hookers,

So I've been developing my first game for the past several months, and it's based heavily on reading books and solving puzzles/riddles.

The thing is I need a whole bunch of filler books to fill up the shelves in the game. I was originally going to write them all myself but I figured maybe I can speed up the process by having other people contribute some stories.

I can't pay anyone because I'm going to be releasing the game for free anyway (it's a really small game), but anyone who contributes will be put in the credits and will have my sincerest gratitude Smiley

For anyone interested, here are the criteria:

- It should be less than 1000 words
- It should take place generally in the medieval times/dark ages
- It should have a title and a made up author name
- It can be any genre: drama, horror, comedy, fable, children's book, etc.
- Avoid references to real historical events, places, figures, etc. Feel free to make up names of places and figures. There's a whole 1000 year period of dark ages that the main story doesn't touch on in order to leave room for creativity for the short stories.

That's all I can think of for now. You can submit multiple stories if you want.

Just pm me your submissions.
I'll be taking them up until the end of September.

Thanks to anyone who contributes! All submissions are very much appreciated!

--- EDIT ---

I started a devlog for this game. Check it out: http://forums.tigsource.com/index.php?topic=47866.0
