My opinion is that there are a lot of definitions for what an indie game should be, not just mine and not just yours or Anna's. Being "different from mainstream" should only be one way we measure "indieness".
As for TIGSource, I think the community has done a lot to promote innovative indie games. I'm not sure why you'd think otherwise... we've covered 4 out of the 5 games up for the Nuovo award. One of the games even came out of a TIGSource competition.
The original point being how important a role your site plays in the understanding of independent gaming and how irresponsible your acceptance of the IGF not-nuovo results are, but whatever, bro!

just to clarify, the issue i have lies here more in the fact that you are so complicit in these selections than you are at least a little bit annoyed by the means by which they were arrived at. you are essentially validating (and expecting people to accept) the unrefined and poor selection process that you yourself admit is flawed.

to agree that there should have been more innovative games up for main prize this year is completely avoiding the main issue here, which is that the judging process is fundamentally flawed.
does it really relieve you that much that there are people out there who are willing to accept these flawed results at the expense of the independent game developers who'd not only spent their time developing these games, but who'd also (in good faith) paid the sum of the entry fee under the pretense of understanding what an independent games should be (which, without explicitly blaming you, or your editors, is, in a sense, an understanding your site and community help to cultivate).

if you really agreed with the one thing that both me and anna anthropy are saying, you wouldn't imply this is a fault of the indie community for being the self loathing "emo kids at highschool." the soothing, and uninformed "outside opinions" have become the meter by which the IGF entries are being judged.
what's the point of IGF if all we're doing is judging (as alex may puts it) "unfunded" games as opposed to games that are markedly different from "mainstream" games in more ways than simply how much money they cost.
if nothing else, please at least do me the courtesy of understanding what i'm saying instead of saying you agree with what i'm saying without understanding what i'm saying at all.

sorry, paul, you bring up the good point of "bitter losers may feel bitter", but i just want to bring the discussion back to my point, which is asking why there's such a vocal judging group this time around as opposed to other years? you can say it's because more people are bitter about not being nominated, but the number of IGF entries this year has grown about the same ratio as the number of judges.

yo derek dont know if you know this, but two of the comments you reference are by the same person. also, the first person references a game that refers to a nuovo award nominee (aka: true IGF).
addendum: one is just a plea for technical support. one is just some guy who likes street fighter?

i think there's a problem when almost every discussion of the nominations contains one or more of the judges trying to justify their selections.

i agree with some of the points here, but it has more to do with coverage than it does people evaporating. the big indie games blog sites don't really cover the small games to the extent that they used to. timw is keep on keeping on, but i can't honestly tell you the last time i read the tigsource front page for any revelant information. tigsource feels like a marketing tool more than a news site, but i'm of course, sorta biased.

as the ugandan government wants genocide, the indies want independence. ireland bans blasphemy; will tigsource ban freedom?
we shall overcome, my brothers. we shall overcome some day.

ban imminent, bringing to the forefront the class struggle. above, fiddler's green, where the indie superlords "discuss" the state of the indie community, their egos so far detached from their humble roots that they know not the everyman's struggle. down below, the working class struggle to gain foothold in the community -- to break the vicious cycle of shit that is bandied above by the fatcats. the superlords cast judgment on the weak. not a finger is lifted.
now shall we see this very action reciprocated -- and the consequences it shall bring. only then shall the derek yuminati be revealed, a power structure whose single aim is to keep power at arms length, and to deny it to the rest.
my brothers, there comes a point where we must simply burn the rope. we must climb out of plato's storied cave, unafraid to run down the passage. don't shit your pants.
achievement unlocked.

Maybe he can be a holiday occurrence; like Frosty the Snowman he appears on Christmas and leaves shortly afterwards.
I haven't gotten around to checking this out either, I'll give it a proper go sometime this week.
how dare you make a spectacle of him
