Still following your progress here, the shots I missed are appropriately juicy. Liking the look of the map editor!

another snippet that came to me while experimenting with mood and instruments. =)
I was about to comment on the piano improve (great progression on that) but holy shit Sand City People. Finish that up son, that's some mystical magical shit there. For the thread's consideration, I submit several chiptunes for YM2203 and YM2608: EVENT_2.M (YM2203) LAMSUN.M (YM2203) Both of those split FM3's output through a fairly obscure programming trick to get more voices. Mindstorm (Chaos) (YM2608 + 86 PCM) This one uses a special stereo field trick using a DAC flag and glitch effects lovingly done in the source code. Programmer dickwaving aside, I hope these sound as good as they were fun to program.

I'm a big fan of the NEC PC98 Good luck with your project Quick technical question: What software do you use for composing / rendering your musics in the same style as the PC98? Is there a VST you would recommend? To answer your question, I do not use any VSTs. I use a PC-98 API called PMD by Masahiro Kajihara, the very same API used by Ryu Umemoto ( YU-NO, Desire) to program his music. I've also written a guide for PMD on my site, both for setup and for programming... though it needs a bit more information to be useful enough for a beginner. To render, I use the FMPMD player. I do have a working PMD player in another one of my games, but in the interest of cross-platform compatibility I've decided to use renders of the original .M files in Amihailu's World of Magic.

Thanks for sharing guys! Great batch of music. My new chiptunes pale in comparison, but here they are anyway (new to the genre): "Bit by Bit" - NES (Tweakbench's Peak, Toad, Triforce) "Byte by Byte" - GENESIS (Yamaha YM2612) Critique from talented folks like yourselves is especially valuable for a green composer like me; much appreciate if any chiptuners can give me tips or pointers on the genre. Cheers! I use a programming language to write mine, which scares off most musicians. In that realm, all the effects are stuff you need to do with programming tricks—as such, if you tried it out right now you'd probably feel limited to some very basic things. That being said, as for advice on composition, just listen to your favourite composers and try some of their techniques on for size. Your "Peter the Wolf" track from SC seems like a good thing to transcribe to electrical signals. See if you can get the same feel as that, with your chip stuff, and you're on your way! Of course, I must follow my advice post with some music! I have for you today two themes of Pursuit for a visual novel I'm composing for: Pursuit (low)Pursuit (high)These aren't chiptunes, they're mixed compositions (leaning electronic) but they'd be quite easy to write to play on PC-9801.

Orchestral music is anything but my specialty, but I've been having thoughts about doing a short symphonic EP for some time. This short little sketch might be the seedling for such an album. https://soundcloud.com/hoffman_iv/orchestral-sketchIf it sucks, let me know. If you like it, let me know. If you have tips, let me know. I want to branch out of the chiptune stuff a bit. Cheers guys. I think the piece certainly works, though in my opinion it could use some percussive sparkle like intermittent triangle hits. The piece begs for it! I really dig your chiptunes too, particularly "Eibensbach" from your new EP. I'm not one for making NES stuff myself (I prefer NEC PC-88 and PC-98) so I have respect for anyone who can work with that and not want to tear their hair out. For my bit I've been brushing up on my electronic and fusion scores: This is a track for a demo game my friend is putting together, an escalating techno theme. This is a "mysterious moments" track for a visual novel, a fusion track with a mix of traditional and electronic instruments. This is an ambient-y PC-9801-86 chiptune, utilizing the full power of the 86 soundboard.

I really should get some kind of experience with Unity as I'm familiar with UE3, XNA, Monogame, and SDL and SFML. It'd be useful for my work but it just seemed clunky enough in 2D for me to run to the hills and make do with just using a framework to make any 2D games where I need a lot of control under the hood. Hats off to you if you're making it work, though!

This would probably have been more appropriate as a Devlog thread, but nevertheless I welcome you to TIGSource!
If you're using RPG Maker VX Ace or older (up to and including Mamirin for PC-88) I know quite a bit about usage, scripting, and some database organization tricks.

I don't know if anyone's mentioned this yet, but the kerning on that font used for the logo is killing me. Between that and uneven pixel sizes on the text, it just looks very unprofessional and not very appealing.
Looks like the game's still in a kinda rough state though, so I imagine you'll get the logos and text done up real pretty before release.

Sounds appropriately somber! A suggestion I'd have to put this thing over the top would be to have the synth play around in the stereo field, since it's quite airy and that'd enhance the mood. For my contributions today, I have A mellow electronic track for a webcomic and The PC-9801 chiptune version! It uses soundboard 86, so it can stream "crisp" 8-bit PCM samples to a single PCM channel, which I use here for drums.

I should be able to get started working on this game again soon, after I release Amihailu in Dreamland 1.10. I've got a lot of stuff going on but I know there's a larger audience for this RPG!
