Games run in standard mode won't be caught by fraps. They need to be run under hardware acceleration. Unfortunately it's up to whoever built the games in the first place to set them to HWA mode, it's not just something the player can switch on.

To get an idea of just what Fusion can do under HWA though, check this out:

Hugs to all my fellow indies! Also a monocole hattip.  Gentleman

And as for rejection, the best way to deal with it is to grab your fellow indies and go get beers. And if you are not allowed to get beers, get hugs.

Hardware Acceleration has been a constantly developed addition to Fusion by Clickteam over the last couple years. I think the initial release was in 2007 maybe? It was the first of their big push to introduce a whole bunch of new exporters into Fusion, including Flash, Java, Mobile Java, Blackberry, and supposedly iPhone and Android soon. There were also rumors of an XNA exporter but if it is planned it won't be for a while.

The first game I actually finished was The Longest Night, which is now playable in Flash form on the Lantana Games website. If you like the idea of running a homeless shelter in the middle of a blizzard, you'll like TLN.

I noticed an immediate problem with your article. It states that Fraps cannot capture games made in Multimedia Fusion. This WAS true, until the release of the Hardware Accelerated version. Now, because Fusion games run off of the graphics card and not the CPU, capturing Fusion-based gameplay with Fraps works just fine.  Smiley

In order to be a Finalist, entrant must sign certain Submission documentation provided by Sponsor, which may include some or all of the following: release of claims against Sponsor; acknowledgement of Sponsor's development of game concepts that may be similar to entrant's Submission; first right of refusal to Sponsor for any development or publishing of Submission; agreement to provide Sponsor with splash/title/credits and logo credit similar to "funded in part by the Activision Independent Games Competition Prize 2010"; grant of name and likeness publicity rights to Sponsor; and full representations and warranties regarding the IP ownership of the Submission.

I love it. Activision is flat out ADMITTING they are going to steal your idea. Not only that, they are going to steal your name, logo, ip rights, and soul. More than that, they get to hold onto all of that even if you don't win. Reminds me of the first part of Kickassia:

Let's just cut to the chase here. I am going to... invade you. My army is going to take you down, conquer Molassia, and take it as our own. Now don't get any bright ideas, don't try to fight back or anything like that, my army is quite literally unstoppable, undefeatable, and, of course, invincible where, you are... just you? Haha. So I'll give you ten minutes to pack things up and piss off. Deal?

Pass.

Exactly. Which is why if you want to just distribute a quick game with your resume, you're better off finding the smallest flash drives you can (that will fit the game, obviously). That way you can order in bulk and hand out a lot of resumes/games come GDC.

Tried calamari for the first time last night. Definitely liked it but will have to try it in a context other than Chinese food.

I have seen flash drives that have a slit in the back to hold a business card. Seems like an expensive endeavor, though, just to offer a game along with your card when the download link would work. Same goes for Ramiro's cards in that link.

On the other hand I guarantee if you did some searching you could find a pile 128mb flash drives for like $5 on eBay. Order those up and load 'em with your business card, resume, and some 10mb games.

What do you win if you flip the table so epically the hinges break and it crashes into the TV?

My friend who did the music told me this is worth continuing. If we do there'll be on-foot segments as well to allow for a whole lot more control freedom. For now it's just a made-in-one-week prototype that we think is kinda cool.

The jump was definitely tricky to get working right, and I did my best to get easy jump puzzles near the beginning and make them harder as it went in, culminating in labyrinths with animals carefully placed in the walls as both hints and traps while making it so there's no one way through the mazes. One other feature suggested was destructible environments, so like there's a bridge you're running across and suddenly it explodes up ahead so you have to jump the explosion or fall into the water below. Unfortunately we had a 20-conditional limit for the contest we were originally developing this for and so we had to cut that. Definitely something worth putting back in for a future version though.

Hey folks. Thought I would mention that we have finally gotten around to launching the prototype of our western-style shmup Hunter's Gulch. It requires Windows XP/Vista/7, a DirectX9 (or greater) graphics card, and about 3-10 minutes of your time (depending on how many times you play through to try and get the highest grade).

Hiya Kumar!

So last year I submitted The Longest Night to Indiecade and my thoughts are this:

Pros:
- Cheap. I don't know what the submission cost is this year but last year I think it was $35. Very doable and good for sending in multiple games if you've got 'em.
- Efficient. I had no problems uploading the game to their server, though I hear a lot of people did.

Cons:
- No feedback. You are either in or you are out, without explanation. This can especially hurt if your game isn't polished and you want to know what you can improve.
- Never listed unless you make it. Unlike IGF, who posts up everybody who submits, whether they win or not, IndieCade only lists their finalists/winners. In my opinion, this is the worst part. IGF lets everyone see what everyone submitted. IndieCade has a very closed-door feel.
- Weird e-mails. A lot of "you must do this" and "if you don't do this you will hear from us" kind of stuff. Not for the feint of heart.

Ben, to answer your question, the game was done and polished strictly for IndieCade. All bugs out, awesome lo-rez graphics, and artsy style gameplay. Unfortunately it just didn't make it and, as I mentioned above, no explanation why. IGF cleared up that confusion, and the general consensus was that it was not anyone's cup of tea. So basically, these competitions set me back $130 with nothing to show for it besides better programming ability. I guess that counts for something, though.
59  Community / Townhall / Little Western Prototype on: February 16, 2010, 11:55:47 AM
So over the last week my team and I developed a little western shooter prototype called "Hunter's Gulch." It's a one level shmup where you hunt animals and jump over things, but due to the grading system at the end it's still pretty challenging. We developed this in only 20 events worth of code for Clickteam's "20 Event Game Creation Contest" but we decided instead to just release the game for free on our website later this week so we can add in some final touches. Here's a couple screenies, enjoy.
