Wow just wow, This is highly unintelligent. There is a lot you need to read about before you just jump into this pool.

You need to read not just the surface of a history since you are only going back 30 years it should not be too hard. You must also read the reasoning for the history we have and why it is the way it is. The true black struggle has been not only sabatoged but hi-jacked so that people like you will have a negative perception of black people. Now I know, you will say I don't see it as negative. But it is genuinely far from positive and what early black pioneers wanted for themselves and envisioned for themselves. Do research about black wall street, Tulsa, Learn the truth about what is under central park. Do research as to the real reason blacks are in prison and hunted *hint 30k a head for private prisons to keep prisons full.

America has never been a friend to blacks and it is so bad that if a black cries foul it is viewed as a joke. You could have picked so many other aspects of blacks like the opposition they face trying to do anything good for themselves and why so many try to leave and are just forced back into it.

WHy not make a game about Ruby Bridges, Nina Simone, and countless others. Why not make a game like Good Will hunting, which is truthfully more about a black than a white because that is the truth about so many black youth who squander their potential because of the culture you so "admire".

As a side note, I think it is hilarious that finally someone is making a game that puts a black character in as a main character and only does so because it is overall negative. Blacks are never in games as heroes if at all, unless the designer says we need to diversify so lets use a darker texture to make blacks happy. It is funny because so many indy games are truely about blacks.

I played "Inside" all I could think about is how the boy should be a black being hunted by white slave masters.
I am playing "Little Nightmares" and all I could think about was again a black being hunted by a the gluttonous European races desire for more with little import to others. It is amazing that all the tragedies in our modern world stems mainly from one race and no one dares call them on it.

Make your game, I don't care wouldn't be the first time. We are just being to sensitive anyway. Here some research that you can do.

The bottom line here is portrayal, you can choose to portray what "they" want you to portray or try to do better albeit harder to do without negatively portraying the other side of the coin.

incidentally, my game I am working on too is about a black but I will be getting slack on a different aspect even though mine is being done using the library of congress to back up all my subject matter.

I played the demo and must say your level of detail and attention to quality is inspiring.

You are doing a good job in taking a fresh look in a genre that needs love and attention. I do not play this genre much but your game has made me want to look more closely at it.

revolutionizing quality.

I don't want to be right. Nor do I think I am right. But indies are very hard to get up and running to 0% - 100%. for a number of reasons.

What I am saying is you should have a strong foundation and be ready to go alone or continue alone if members come and go.

I love your project and haven't seen such a high quality in pixel art. and do not want to see it come to an end or have another long pause because you get disheartened. It is an inevitable part of indie development sadly.

Whenever I feel disheartened I watch some videos from WizardFu to remember what focus is. He solo brought Songbringer into the world and it is amazing to watch his work and progress.

Whatever you do. keep going. Yours is one project I would love to see completed. Your vision, ability and product are awesome.

Aedous for Eitr is right. You have to much talent to let a project go to waste because of requiring or relying on others. There are so many youtubers and tutorials on Unity and if push comes to shove you can get assets from the store. I have a pretty big game endeavor too but little by I am chipping away at it solo by doing the tutorials for 2d. Unity is constantly making 2d games easier. You can start with these:

I have been using his tutorials for the rpg series very easy to follow and understand. and if you get a patron You can ask for personal assistance.

also great tutorials for 2d work.

My research for indie developers is that you should do as much stuff as you can alone. others, while well intentioned cannot be expected to have the same passion for your passion project.
