Rad concept, I love it when the music kicks in!!! I love the design for Beat, I think his headphones should bump around to the music though, that would be great!
Annnd... actually he should headbang to the music, too =)
@PsySal: Glad you like that moment, I hope you like the rest of his attacks I was thinking about making his headphones bump, but the headbanging is a way better idea! I take your word sir, I'll work on it :D @Nix: But of course. I'm still designing his attacks, because I want them to cover the entire song and fit with the music. Some of them will be explosions on determined areas, falling blocks, beams etc... but there will be attack whose position will be more or less random. You'll need both reflex and rythm to dodge them.

Developer / Playtesting / [WIP] [ALPHA] Beat, the BOSS
|

This fellow is called Beat. It's a bad guy Beat him! Well it isn't going to be that easy. Beat is a tough... round, purple cyclops that loves music. And he's SO purple that he can spawn bullets, laser beams and bombs out of his face. Yep, it's gonna be hell. But not everything will sound that bad. You may fall when facing Beat but, dude, this is only a game. You can always play again. And this time you'll have the experience needed to defeat him... Experience that you could use to buy upgrades, weapons, powerups and bacon, to assure your victory upon that ugly spherical fella! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- OK, that's the idea. "Beat, The BOSS" is a game i'm developing with awesome ChevyRay's Flashpunk library and Noel/Drazzke's awesome APE. It's an music - actionshooter game, with a big bald ball to shoot and tons of bullets to dodge. It has upgrades, experience bonus and that kind of stuff. The game is intended to be played by two different kind of people: -Average gamer: Your try to beat the boss. Fail, but earn exp. Purchase things to beat him bad. Fail. Repeat. Succeed. -Hardcore gamer: You try to achieve victory purchasing the less upgrades as possible. Final score will be based on time and on the number and kind of upgrades you purchased. So the real challenge will be defeating him with no upgrades. That will be HELL. Nearly impossible. But hey, that's why they call it challenge. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Controls: D-PAD for move (gamepad controller will be enabled soon) Z: Jump X: Shoot A/S: Change weapon You start with 3HP, and will be able to purchase more on the shop. But right now only DoubleJump, Jetpack and LaserDarts are enabled. Working on it. Well, here's the alpha, hope you like it. It's still rough, but it's playable. Try it!Feedback and criticism both welcomed and appreciated. I'm still thinking about upgrades, I want the game to have a total of 20 upgrades/weapons, and I have designed just 11. Any idea is welcome :D

I think it has a great potential. Gameplay seems funny, and I like the teamwork mechanic showed in the video. Also they're ninja sheeps, and that's awesome. I hope you get an sponsor soon, looking forward to it

Also I ended up using piet's edit because I tried to copy his edit and ended up doing the same thing so I used his edit which in the end was my edit looking at his edit and making the same edit.
Are you really, REALLY sure? :D More samurai stuff, now i've done the samurai-waiting-for-enemy-to-come-and-eat-his-mighty-steel-stance. The character looks bigger and more muscled, more like Mitsurugi (Soul Blade/Soul Calibur character), which isn't weird because i was inspired by him (Relic stance, f**k yeah). I'm not sure of which one is better :S

No outline is fine, they never used outlines in arcade games, only on the NES because they were stuck with 4 suck colours per sprite. For this kind of high color sprites, better go with no outlines.
That said, I would use a bit more saturated colours to make it stand out more against the bg.
I'll try to change the palette to more saturated colours and post the new one asap. EDIT: Here I Am, chananaaan, rock you like a hurricane... @Maikel: It's the girl from Momodora, but it's not for that game. Here is my first try at animating it: Is she walking backwards? And keep up with Momodora! I'm really looking forward to playing that game finished :D @rjhw1: Love that whale :D But that green bg is burning my eyes xD

ITEMS! For my current project - still quite a few to do - that's about 10% of all Icons. Love your style man. @rdin: What is that sprite for? Momodora? I made a portion of background wall with some kind of oni mask. I think the style fits the character without outline, what do you think? EDIT: Lol didn't post the image EDIT2: Polished background:

With the outlined version - try making the outline a dark colour rather than black. And maybe take off the outline where `light` hits (so remove it from the top of the sword/shoulders) ...see what you think.
Done, but i must have done it wrong, cause it seems weird somehow. Big fan of no outline pixel art, and this is no exception, looks really cool.
Thanks! :D I like the no outline version. Against the right background the non-outline version will just pop.
Which kind of background style would fit him? Try to give an example with a game or picture please, i'm not sure of my own style yet I made a rough stand animation, just 3 frames, for fun:

i like the first more (great stuff!)... i think it is a question of background design too... does he use hair spray? btw this "toe separator" seems to be at the wrong place... I tried to give him kind of an afro-samurai-look... without afro of course. That kind of wild hair. And you were right about the toe-separator-thing, just fixed it. And a few pixels, here and there New versions:

Developer / Playtesting / Re: Game Name Clinic - I will rate your game's name

My game right now is called Arkanoid Invaders. I gave it that name because, at first, it was nothing else than an arkanoid clone i was creating to experiment with SDL. Right now it's a real project, and gameplay has differed totally from space invaders, and looks more like arkanoid mixed with a shmup (a hard one ). I think the name doesn't fit the game anymore. Right now i'm working on the game storyline, but I don't want the name to depends on that. Any ideas/advices? Here is a video made by a friend of mine for fun:

Developer / Design / Re: RPGs without dungeons

I'd rather play a rpg with a huge, HUGE world to explore. But it differs, depending of the kind of game, atmosphere etc...
For example, it would be great to explore a huge jungle, divided in different areas and villages. Something zelda-like, with the whole world to explore, but without any dungeon.
Anyway, i think I didn't get your point. I don't understand the large buildings you are talking about.

At first the concept seemed far too simple. Then I died on round 6. It turned to be pretty addictive, but frustrating when playing with a touchpad xD I liked it, so i will try to get a mouse and show it to some friends. And nice art too, i really liked the cartoonish style. Can't help with XNA stuff though, sorry
