I'm watching The Revenant. For whatever reason it reminds me of Souls games. I wish From Soft would make a western next Tongue

thats what i more or less try to do. im just not good at backstabbing. and getting to them is the painful and now tedious part. sometimes i miscalculate where the dragons fire affect me and wham, burned (which happens more and more as i begin to lose patience). are polearms worth? im using a spear because i sorta got comfortable with the timing and range, but it might probably not be the best tool for thr job.

edit: i think i know what i am doing wrog: "also dont block with your shield cause it wont come out"

You can cheese the red dragon from one of the towers after Phalanx stone with bow. Buy a 200 arrows or so and shoot him while he swoops down. Takes some patience but you get rid of him permanently.

Looks like they found a glitch which will be player favorite in PvP in case From doesn't fix it (no spoilers, list screenshots of character in various areas)

I'm reading it atm. I think it's pretty good and insightful about game design. Of course it is also nice to hear how Spelunky's development happened.
125  Player / Games / Re: VR Games on: April 01, 2016, 01:27:33 PM
I think VR has better chance than motion controls since there seems to be interest in it outside of games also. From obvious porn applications (lol) to different real life applications varying from training to remote working. There seems to be a lot of interest in VR in my local area's software development companies which are not game developers. I see there being potential in VR and advances which games make in other fields when technology becomes better and cheaper and people figure out new uses for it.

I saw speculation that From Software is breaking away from Namco Bandai because they pressured for more Souls games while Miyazaki would like to do whatever he wants instead.

that makes sense actually. it doesn't seem like bamco is that "nice" of a publisher tbh. for instance, dark souls 1 and 2 clearly have rushed content in them (dks2 especially). demon's souls and bloodborne don't, at least not main game content. also, bborne has one big and substantial expansionm, while dks2 and 3 have segmented dlc and season passes. dks2 also had preorder weapons.

to be clear, none of these things are somehow horrible but they seem like results of publisher interference rather than autonomous dev decisions to me. which leads me to speculate that sony probably gives From more freedom to do what they want and take their time with games.

just speculation ofc, no way to be sure about any of this.

EDIT: also i guess ymmv on publisher niceness. sony didn't even want to publish demon's souls outside of asia and shuhei yoshida outright called it "crap". they only approached From about another game after they had their big breakthrough with dark souls under namco bandai.

Good point. However, other than what Miyazaki said about DkS3 being final most of what I said is at moment just rumors and stuff "some guy in Reddit said" so nothing is clear atm. I wonder which publisher From would work in future with. I suppose all publishers would want a souls game for sure profit rather than new ip  Huh?
Also I wish they'd stay out of exclusive deals :/

Miyazaki has pretty much said that Dark Souls III is last Dark Souls game. I remains to be seen if it is last "Souls game" though. However, I got the vibe that he wants to do something completely different but he was a bit ambiguous on this I think.

I saw speculation that From Software is breaking away from Namco Bandai because they pressured for more Souls games while Miyazaki would like to do whatever he wants instead. Remains to be seen what will happen afterwards since there is rumors that Sony would like to buy From Software. I sincerely hope not since I have no plans to invest into any consoles Sad

true, that's the bad part of world tendency. but at this point, it's probably better to play offline anyway. not much happening in the online community anymore.

Nah, there is actually lot of players there atm probably because of DkS III hype. I saw few summon signs and summoned people too few days ago. Also lots of ghost players running everywhere.

Also I summoned that someone for Flamelurker because I was tired of mines and the long way to the boss so figured I could test that feature too. Flamelurker is difficult for me because I can't figure his hitbox which is bad considering his flame body and AoE attacks. Then again, I'm not as good player in DeS as in DkS.

Pure white and black world tendency requirements for some important encounters also make it imo rather difficult to figure out the lore. At least for me world tendency mechanics basically locked off a lot of these encounters especially since online tendency tends to screw up your local world tendency values.
131  Player / Games / Re: Do you prefer short or long games? on: March 27, 2016, 08:42:42 AM
Depends on game I think. Long games are ok as long as they aren't artificially stretched. Short games are cool though especially if they are good from start to finish. Probably has something to do with games not overstaying their welcome as mentioned.

I don't play much nowadays but I don't like much short burst games such as mobile games. If I play the game for 5min I can very well do something else.  So while I rarely play it is usually hour or two at once. Most of the games I finish currently seem to be all around from 2-15 hours I guess with outliers such as Souls games.
132  Player / Games / Re: Dark Souls and Bloodborne on: March 26, 2016, 01:45:13 PM
I have been playing DeS recently. It is much easier now than before. Suppose I'm more experienced. I also summoned someone to help me in one boss first time since now I play as a human most of the time instead of soul form. Grasses annoy me less this time since I'm better player (though not good) but I still consider them a poor mechanic. Many small things feel like Miyazaki was developing many of the concepts which eventually led to DkS but aren't really there yet in DeS.

No content spoilers below:

Apparently at least
  • crashing when using bonfire for some people
  • kicking you out of online when tabbing out of the game,
  • frame rate drops regardless of your hardware
  • you are unable to use the Homeward Bone on PC unless you spam use it, probably because the animation plays too fast in 60fps or something
  • You take increased fall damage at 60fps

Afaik they are for pc-version and there might already be a zero-day patch for most of the problems. I think that problems were reported from streamer copies given for youtubers. Seems like From is busy fixing most of that stuff already. Looks like they are also using Japanese version to find bugs before international release.

@Silbereisen
Most of the stuff I wrote about the game was on par with speculations on this thread Tongue  Though I suppose it's good to be careful. I should try too and concentrate on my studies and DeS/DkSII Concerned

Haha, kudos to you if you have willpower for that  Tongue
I have been browsing dks3 sub reddit for west which is spoiler moderated and read a bit about mechanics and general feelings of the players who have played the Japanese version. General consensus sounds good with game having numerous small enhancements, online game apparently works this time properly even with blue sentinels etc. Looks like there will be recurring characters and many people said that the game felt a direct sequel to DkS1 Addicted I'm probably more hyped than I should be. Well, back to playing DeS.

About world design and interconnectedness some say it reminds them of BB mixed with DkS1 whatever that means.

EDIT: Also apparently streamers have had numerous problems with PC version. Hope From can fix them in three weeks  Beg

Played few hours of DkSII because hyped for DkS3. Went through the Forest of Giants and collected most of the stuff I could find. I feel that having only one or two estus until you find shards was quite frustrating at first. However, after I got the hang of the mechanics in this game I enjoyed the exploration a bit and fight against Pursuer was quite nice. Most of the time I was quite wary of ambushes and nasty surprises which was a good thing.

In the end I still have this strange "grindy" feeling while playing where I have to work to get into good parts of the game whereas in DkS the first half of the game was really strong. At the same time I also kind of dread some of the more annoying or boring areas I know are ahead such as Blighttown 2.0, Black Gulch(?), Shrine of Amana and few others.

Watched Vaatividya's DkS III videos. The game looks good and seems like there will be returning characters both from DkS I&II which I think is cool. Looks like the game is structured around Firelink shrine like DeS' Nexus. Not sure what I feel about that. I really liked DkSI way of world over DeS while DkS2 was mostly worst of both approaches.

Another thing I noticed when watching the Lothric High Wall and Undead Settlement areas was that their atmosphere felt really creepy and brooding in a way only DeS (especially tower of Latria) felt to me. This game might unsettle me far more than previous DkS games  Crazy

I also checked some DkSII lore videos. Looks like I missed much lore by not playing DLCs such as the effect of three crowns and the existence of chaos.

I'm really tempted to buy PS4 just for Bloodborne but maybe I should get a new mobile phone first since my current one is a bit buggy. Though I want Bloodborne...  Cry

I think PvP and coop worked well in DkS II. Had some fun helping others and in Belltower shenanigans. Even though Darkwood forest battles were fun too and worked ok at least with the mod which told you if your connection was working or not.
139  Player / Games / Re: Dark Souls and Bloodborne on: March 03, 2016, 02:06:25 PM
the enemy placement is overall better, but not amazingly better. there are actually some instances where they changed perfectly decent encounters for the worst just to trip up old players.

one of the main improvements is the placement of fragrant branches. you can now get into the shaded woods and subsequent areas much earlier, making the progression more akin to demon's souls where you have access to all the "paths" from the start.

Fragrant branch thing sounds good addition and over all it sounds like SOTFS is improvement. Then again for enemy placement my main gripe in DkS II are annoying group battles (copy paste three same enemies in small area and call it a day) which I found boring and the pacing of the encounters. Really difficult to point out what exactly feels out of place in them compared to DkS or DeS though.

I'm not that interested in spending more money on DkS II since I never really got around playing the DLC stuff either even though I bought the season pass. Funnily though I bought DkS twice, once for PS3 and then for PC  Tongue
140  Player / Games / Re: Dark Souls and Bloodborne on: March 03, 2016, 10:48:22 AM
Yeah, that's why I'm not buying it. I heard that enemy placement is better and it is one of my main gripes in DkS II though even with improvement probably not enough to change my overall opinion on the game. I tried to play Forest of fallen giants today but noticed the lackluster pacing of it compared to, lets say Undead parish/Taurus area, in DkS.

Oh well, perhaps I just have to wait until April my souls fix :s
