1  Community / Creative / Re: Coder/designer looking for an artist: How do I find that "special someone"? on: November 12, 2009, 02:50:21 PM
Since it seems people in here are having trouble finding artists, I thought I'd share my perspective on things.
You'd be much better off posting on an artist's forum for this purpose, although don't expect to get many replies (from respectable artists) before you have something to show. Given how hard it is for an artist to accurately judge a programmer, they will want to see something working, as well as a good plan for the game (many artists will be all too familiar with failed projects, having possible been part of a great deal of mod-teams themselves).

Also, make sure you're very clear on what style and specs (2d/3d, resolution, polycount) you're looking for, and don't be afraid to have examples/screenshots ready of games that you think illustrate that well.

As for good places to post this, biased as I am I'd suggest boards.polycount.net for 3d, having been a member there for a long, long time. I feel I must warn you that people can be brutally honest there, although I certainly see that as a plus.
Other places are forums like www.gameartisans.org, www.game-artist.net for 3d, conceptart.org for 2d, and www.wayofthepixel.net for sprite-based stuff

Also, if you can show off previous games, or the bare bones of your new game in a way that's clear and that shows good progress, feel free to contact me anytime (pm) and I'll see if I know someone suitable!

I hope this helps, especially since things seem to have gotten quite heated in this thread!

edit:
It bears keeping in mind that you'll have the most succes if you can pay the artist, or if they get an equal cut of the proceedings. I imagine you'll certainly be able to find artists who'll join you for free, but in that event I would suggest to adjust your expectations.

"There is no horror greater than this masterfully crafted epic tale of horrible horrors that will leave you horrified" - The Times
"It's like 'pong on crack' on heroin" - The Sun

Sounds like a winner already, eh?

I'm starting to think we should do something more eh... serious together? Not that I want to imply this isn't completely serious and highbrow, ofcourse. I just think we can go even more serious, if you can believe it.

Maybe it's just me, but I found the half-pipe to be one of the most annoying things in Flash game history. I must be missing something because I just spent fifteen minutes trying to get past the damned thing and I never actually managed to do so. It certainly looks like it could be a lot of fun, but it's hard to tell right now. If you could make that part a tad less punishing (increase the speed a bit?) I think that more people (or just me, who knows?) would be able to fully enjoy the game.
Seconded
Thirded, even if i've found it nice when i gain velocity i tend to crash on the ceiling
yeah, add another name to the list. Once you get a hang of the ramp (and really, it would help if the arrows actually made it clear you're supposed to jump when going into the curve, not when coming down; As it stands, the arrows tell you to jump at either occasion.) it's alright, but then I got up there and couldn't go up the ladder (and this after more than 20 of aggravatingly slow ramp-stuff) and I said 'fuck it'.

So Terry, who made those wonderful pictures?  Well, hello there!

hell yes.
6  Community / Jams & Events / Re: TIGJam:UK on: November 10, 2008, 04:55:53 AM
If we do this again sometime I'd like to come more prepared, but I had a fantastic time nevertheless. It was great meeting everyone, and being surrounded by all these nice and talented tiggers, beavering away on their games (and posing for eyetoys).
I'm not sure I'll be adding the games I was involved with (Hasselhoff Mystery, jetpacky-hotel-lounge-game and bus-driving-game, respectively) to my cv (the world isn't ready for the Hoff Mystery, I'm afraid), but I had loads of fun doing them.

Thanks again to everyone who made this possible!

Try the 'belkin'-somenumber, it should be unprotected.
Me and Ben (I seem to remember his nickname being something to that effect as well? BenH, maybe?) will be taking the bus there once we're both showered and... well, fully human again.

Much indie-juice was created last night, good stuff. I felt a tad on the useless side, having to use software I'm not really used to, and having only produced a picture of a puppy with it. Still, that puppy was integral to the rubbing-experience

I'll probably turn up sometime after 7, I've still got some stuff to do.

See you there!

I'm doing a bit of (evil, evil) cross-posting here, but it's all in the name of good!

Just posting to tell you guys I'm definitely able to offer two people a comfortable place to sleep. No need to bring an air bed or sleeping bag, it's all taken care of.
pm or email me to save yourself a spot! I live around the corner from Haowan, so if to many people wanted to stay there, I'll take the err.. leftovers.

I might stay at the office on one of the nights, as I do work best at night as well, but that's still up for debate.

So yeah, let me know. As mentioned before, if Bezzy needs somewhere to stay, consider that one spot taken, but we'll figure it all out.

Thanks to the combined generosity of the gentlemanly gentleman Bezzy and whichever Beatnik it is that has agree to lend me their laptop, I'll be there!

Name: Michael / Mighty Pea

What I does: Arty things. 3d, mostly. Here's my flickr: http://flickr.com/photos/michaelknubben/
Some of the things I worked on: Err, nothing indie. At least, I don't think so. Some of the stuff I did freelance might have been, but I suspect that was more in the 'budget'-category of titles.

edit: I've also got a guitar and a midi-keyboard, although the latter is gigantic. I wouldn't mind lending my mediocre skills to a TigJam-jam, so let me know if there's going to be any musical types around.

What I want out of TIGjam: Drinks, chatting to tiggers (possibly while drinking) and hopefully contributing to some wonderful games!

Prefered type of alcohol: I do love me some abbey-beer. Hmmmm. And to think people say religion's never done them any good!

Desirous of accommodation: I live in Hackney, so I should be able to get home easily enough. I'll need to check with my walking calendar/significant other, but if Hotel Chéz Pea isn't already booked, I can accommodate two tiggers on our really comfy 2-person air-bed. Bezzy gets dibs though, if he needs somewhere to stay.

If you could be any animal, which animal would you be?: Animal from The Muppets.

Hey guys,

I was told there might still be some spare computers for poor laptop-less souls such as myself?
I'm an artist, and considering coming to the TIGjam, just not sure yet.

I'd need something that could run the latest photoshop and Silo (for which I can't for the life of me find minimum system specs, but it's pretty lightweight as 3d programs go)

I'll bring my own tablet and mouse/keyboard and all that, ofcourse.

edit: you can check out my stuff at http://flickr.com/photos/michaelknubben . I'm hoping that'll help with getting someone to lend me a pc. I'll make totally rad polygonal dudes for your game.

Which is telling, in a way.
15  Community / Procedural Generation / Re: Procedural Generation Competition on: May 06, 2008, 12:40:49 AM
I look forward to the results from this! I've been loving the small games that have been coming out of tigsource's competitions, as the vast majority are a load of fun. Add to that my being interested in procedural generation, as well as my fear of procedural content generation becoming sentient (and taking over 'ma jerbs', if you will), and you have my shivering in my seat. Nice job, jerks.
16  Player / General / Re: TIGSource London meet - Saturday 26th April on: April 23, 2008, 08:40:07 AM
I thank you for this perfectly reasonable reason to post at Tigforums, haowan. Maybe one day I'll be a regular!

I'll be there, unless the apocalypse happens in the mean time, or if I can't make it for other, less apocalyptic reasons.
17  Developer / Business / Re: how about a Steam-like application for indie games? on: March 17, 2008, 03:09:39 AM
Pathetic attempt to up post-count #1, as mostly copy-pasted from irc:

I don't think there should be another one of those applications.
Steam works because it's the only one I use. If I had multiple games spread across multiple services, that would just be annoying, as well as defeating the purpose of having everything in one place. Not to mention the fact that people would rather have fewer applications running in the background. As was mentioned on irc, this would probably work better as a website, although the 100% profit might be hard to pull off, as you might have a hard time paying the costs of server-space etc... entirely out of advertising. And if you did, chances are people'd avoid the website for its intrusive advertising.

I actually like this style. While the legs bother me somewhat, the overal feel of it really appeals to me. I'm curious to see how he'd animate, especially the opening of the mouth. While I (really) love how there's such an unrealistic amount of teeth all over his mouth, I wonder if it wouldn't look odd when animated? I hope not, though!
19  Developer / Technical / Re: Developer Tools (WIP) on: February 25, 2008, 05:35:17 AM
Hey, how about adding these?

3d:
Silo 2
Runs natively on windows, OSX and Linux. (the linux version has only recently been announced and is of yet unreleased)
Costs $159
http://nevercenter.com/about/

Audio:
Wavosaur
Windows only
Free
http://www.wavosaur.com/

Buzz/Buzé
Windows only, although Aldrin (which comes from the same codebase as Buzé) runs on Linux, and Buzé is reported to run on OSX on (I think) Parrallels
Free/Opensource
http://batman.no/buze/
www.buzzmachines.com

Energy XT 1 & 2
Windows, Linux and OSX
49 euro
This is a lovely modular host. xt2 is still a bit rough around the edges for some parts, but it's cheap, good and crossplatform. Development is promising.
