Hi all! I'm new to this site, although my games have been posted here before (The Desolate Room). Anyway, I wanted to get some feedback on my latest game and see what you all thought about it! Enjoy!

---------------------------------------------------

DOWNLOAD: http://www.scottgames.com/Flan_Rising.zip

Legacy of Flan: Flan Rising

The Story:

Something has crashed right in the middle of Flanville! Some say it was a meteor, some say it was a spacecraft. Whatever it was, it brought all kinds of nasty creepy crawlies with it, and King Flandoo has assembled a group of flan still wet-behind-the-ears to investigate!

The Overworld:

Use the arrow keys to move your flan around the overworld. The only other button you will use here is the TAB button to open your To-Do list, which keeps track of your current quests. To speak to another flan, simply stand over them. To leave the conversation, just walk away. Viewing the map is the same way. Stand over it to view it, then walk away when you are done.

(NOTE: The map cannot be viewed by pressing a button. There is only map, located at the entrance to the Crash Site, towards the beginning of the game.)

Boss Radar: You can hold SHIFT on the overworld map to use your Fladar radar. It will point you in the direction of the next boss you will have to fight!

Other controls:

During battle, you will only use the mouse to click the commands you want to use. Sounds easy, doesn't it?

Quests:

During your adventures, you will have a Do-Do list located at the bottom left corner of your screen. You can check it at any time by holding TAB. There are four quest chains that you will be pursuing during the course of the game.

Battle Quest: These quests are completed during battles. They are usually to defeat a certain enemy, find a certain drop, or become a certain flan. If your quest is to FIND a drop, then you DO NOT have to become that particular flan, you can simple cancel the drop when you find it and the quest will still be complete when the battle is over.

Investigation Quest: This is the story line of Flan Rising. When you talk to the first flan in this quest chain, he will direct you to the next flan that you should talk to and tell you where to find him. If you encounter a flan who doesn't identify himself and tells you to come back later, this is probably a flan that you will need to talk to at a later time for your investigation quest.

Exploration Quest: These quests are completed by simply exploring the areas that you are directed to. Exploration quests are usually completed by reaching the middle of the specified area. Most areas will be in your path anyway while completing other quests. These shouldn't be much trouble.

Boss Quest: The boss quest chain is the only quest chain required to complete the game. All other quest chains can be ignored if you simply want to beat the game. However, there are certain advantages to getting high marks on the other quests.

Get an "A" on the Battle Quest chain: +200 max life
Get an "A" on the Investigation Quest chain: +200 max life
Get an "A" on the Exploration Quest chain: +100 max life
Get an "A" on the Boss Quest chain: +10 luck

When you have completed a quest chain, you will receive an "A" rank.

Battle:

When you encounter an enemy, each of your flan will begin filling their action bar. When a flan's action bar is filled, it's their turn to attack. Enemies do not have action bars, but attack at random based on how high their speed stat is. By decreasing an enemies speed, their likelyhood of attacking is decreased.

During battle there are several powerups and powerdowns that can be stacked on you and your enemies. All of your powerups will be listed as icons on the right side of the screen. Enemy powerdowns are listed on the left side of the screen. Any status effects placed on your by the enemy will appear as large icons above your flan and will be much more noticable. There are three status effects that enemies can inflict on you:

Poison: Depending on the level of the enemy, this will cause varying amounts of damage in random intervals until the effect depletes or is cured.
Slow: This will keep your action bars from filling at the proper speed. If the slow effect is high enough, your actions bars will actually deplete and you won't get any more turns until the slow effect lessens.
Death: If you let this counter reach 1, this is instant death for all of your flan. There are three commands that can defend against this- Resist Plus: specifically for blocking "death" for a period of time. Refresh Drop: Protects against all three status ailments for a period of time. Finally, Life Wall, which will not BLOCK the attack, but will instantly ressurect your flan for it's ten second duration.

Nearly all of the status effects placed on you and your enemies is based on a timer. When the timer runs out, so does the effect. However, the effect SEVERITY is also dependant on how high the counter is. If you stack poison on an enemy, poison damage will be much higher based on how much time is left for the effect. Likewise, if you get your "armor bonus" counter higher, the armor bonus effect is also increased along with it's duration.

Leveling up:

The experience system works a bit differently than most rpg's. Experience is not rewarded after a battle, and is not calculated based on the difficulty of the enemy. Experience is awarded based on three things, damage points, combo points, and bonus points from any given turn. These points are then added to an experience pool which is shared with each flan throughout the battle.

For the following descriptions, one "turn" is defined as the period of time immediately after one flan selects a battle command, to the time when the next flan gets to choose his command.

Damage points are, point for point, how much damage is dealt in a given turn, from status effects to physical damage. This is the large white number in the list of three numbers displayed during an attack. Combo points are increased based on how many hits are registered within one turn. The more hits registered, the higher the increment that the combo points will accumulate. This is the large yellow number. Finally, bonus points are awarded based on how many damage increasing stat-boosts are currently active. For instance, if your normal attack would inflict 10 damage, but now inflicts 30 damage thanks to a stat-boost of some sort, you will be awarded 30 damage points, and 20 bonus points (for the bonus damage added). Bonus points are calculated BEFORE taking into account enemy defenses. So your bonus points might climb faster than the actual damage you deal. Bonus points are in blue.

After these points are added to the experience pool in the bottom right corner, they are distributed after each flan takes a turn. After each turn, the flan whose turn it was will receive 10% of the experience pool for each monster on the play field.

Each flan can level up in four different ways based on what attacks they use. All battle commands are divided into four categories and are color coded into columns. Blue commands are attacks of one kind or another. Pink commands are magical and healing effects. Green commands are luck and stat commands. Purple commands are dark magic, stat decreasing attacks, or poisons. If you select a blue command, the experience you receive will go towards leveling up your blue commands. If you select a green command, you will receive experience towards leveling up your green commands, and so on. You can see your column
levels during each flans turn. Column levels are the large faint numbers overlapping the command columns. For each level you gain, in any column, that flan also gains 5 extra hp.

Keep in mind: This also means that if one flan has been a healer for a long time, it's pink commands will be leveled much higher than it's other commands. It would have to play catch-up if it's converted into a fighter of some sort.

IMPORTANT: There is another experience control at your disposal. If, at any time, you want to dump the entire experience pool into a certain command column for any flan, simply right click on that column. You have to wait until it is that flan's turn before you can do this, since you have to left click on the list of commands itself. This is useful, for instance, if you have only one healer and need to quickly upgrade their healing commands.

Flan Drops:

Each time a flan's turn comes up, you have a one in ten chance of finding a flan drop! Flan drops can be found throughout the duration of any battle. The quality of the flan drop depends on two things- 1) You current luck stat, and 2) Your current party value.

Your Luck stat is determined by the difficulty of the enemies you are currently fighting. You can also increase your luck for one battle by using the "Loot Drop" command if you have it available.

You flan party value is based on the quality of flans you already have. For instance, the game will not allow you to find a high level drop with a bunch of low level flan. When your party has a few medium level flan in it, higher level drops become available.

When you receive a flan drop in battle, you can either accept it (click the green check), or reject it (click the red X). If you accept the drop, that flan will absorb the drop and become a new flan. If you reject the drop, the drop is converted into experience and added to the experience pool.

You should build a party that works best for you. Some flan specialize in dealing damage, such as UFO Flan, Dino Flan, and Toasted Flan. Others specialize in healing, such as Cherry flan and Virtua flan. Some specialize in increasing your stats, like Rando flan. Others specialize in decreasing the stats of enemies, like Vampire Flan. Mix and match until you get a team that works well together!
When you find a flan drop, you will see the name of the drop and it's rank (if it's rank is above 1). The rank is how rare the drop is. There are five ranks, with five being the most rare. Rank 5 flan add bonus attributes to your entire party during battle. Here is a list of the rank 5 flan and their bonus attributes:

Crystal Flan- regen bonus never drops below 100
Big Flan- armor bonus never drops below 100
Toxic Flan- poison damage bonus never drops below 100
Ninja Flan- critical strike chance bonus never drops below 50
Iron Flan- strength bonus never drops below 100

Flavor Drops:

Flavor drops are different from flan drops. Flavor drops add properties to your party during battles. Flavor drops do not change the appearance of your flan, but add certain advantages to each fight. You can have four flavor drops equipped at a time. After each battle, you will be awarded one random flavor drop. You can then decide if you want to equip it to one of your slots, or leave the screen without equipping it. Unlike flan drops, flavor drops to not convert to experience when not equipped, they are simply discarded.

Here are some examples of flavor drops:

Minor regen- +3 hp every eight seconds
Better regen- +7 hp every eight seconds
Major regen- +20 hp every eight seconds
Minor Shield- Start battle with +50 shield stat
Major Shield- Start battle with +100 shield stat
Minor Poison- +3 poison inflicted on enemies every eight seconds
Major Poison- +10 poison inflicted on enemies every eight seconds
Evercomet- Comets fall on enemies every eight seconds
Minor life reserve- Start battle with +200 life reserve stat
Major life reserve- Start battle with +500 life reserve stat
Minor advantage- Start battle with small stat boosts for speed, attack and defense.
Major advantage- Start battle with large stat boosts for speed, attack and defense.

There are 48 flavor drops in all.

Some drops can be equipped multiple times. For instance, if you have Major regen drops in all four slots, then you will actually regain 80 hp every eight seconds (4 X 20hp). Some drops cannot be stacked however, meaning that their effect will not be greater if you have more than one equipped. A drop will be tagged as unstackable if this is the case.

SAVING YOU GAME:

Data is saved automatically in Flan Rising, and consists of two files that will be saved to your games root directory: f4 and f4b. Data is saved after each game transition, such as entering or exiting a battle, or entering and exiting the overworld. To start a new game, delete the two files mentioned above.

Tips and Hints:

Q: I'm on an exploration quest that tells me to get to a place that's not on the map!
A: There are two places you will have to find for exploration quests that are not on the map, and both of those places are in Dead Flan's Pit. Dead Flan's Pit can be confusing. It's full of twists, dead ends, and secret passageways. If you can find your way to the exits, you will have found the hidden areas for your quests.

Q: I'm looking for a monster on my battle quest and I can't find it!
A: There are three enemies for each area. If you want to be thorough, then don't leave an area at all until you know what three enemies occupy that area, just in case you need to come back for one later!

Q: I'm lost in Dead Flan's Pit!
A: Many parts of Dead Flan's Pit are hidden by trees. Some of the hidden passages may be hidden by them as well!

Q: What is the best flan?
A: While it's true that there are different ranks of flan, the real key to success is getting a group that can work together well. There are many battle strategies. You could assemble a group that specializes in summoned monsters- some to summon, and some to enhance the summons. You could assemble a team that specializes in critical strikes- with some attackers along with others to enchance critical chance and critical damage. You can specialize in poisons- with poison casters and others to enhance poisons.

Q: What is a good starting strategy?
A: I would say that a great starting strategy would be to find a supportive flan such as Rando flan and hang on to him for a while. Rando flan can double your attack, defense and hp. While he can't attack very well, he is a great supporting flan for beginners. Another good supportive flan is Frost flan, who can double your hp and also give your team a regen boost. Another good flan to hang onto early in the game is Virtua flan, whose "Absorb" attack lands a decent hit and also doubles as a healing command, converting damage dealt into a regen timer for you.

Well damn, I loved "The Desolate Room!"  I'm looking forward to checking this one out. Grin

But, as Guert says, please post a little something about yourself in the "Introduce Yourself" thread.

Wow, your Crystal Flan is disturbing similar to a character my brother and his friends put out about 10 years ago back in qbasic land. Im not saying its derivative, but crap, it has the same smirk, and its a colourless cylinder as well!
