Well it's a balloon. It wants to go up, and has a happy message on it, so it represents happiness and freedom. The board is holding it down, stopping it from being free, oppressing it. So, it's a symbol of oppression?

This is a postmodernist painting challenging the traditional ideals of aesthetic and metaphor in a contemporary context. Clearly. Also, letsap is my hero now.

Art "meaning" something concrete feels like a slightly naïve/obsolete concept. I find it quite beautiful and interesting (perhaps even more so, if it wasn't classified as "art"). There is obviously a contrast in it (described by Ashkin) but not necessarily a specific "meaning".

This clearly depicts the hardships of happiness overcoming great walls of depression that keep it pinned down.
I don't know why you can't see that. This is truly an artistic masterpiece that will live on for centuries.

I hate abstract art. "Hey, I leaned a board against a balloon! Give me some money!"

Maybe the owner of that balloon didn't want it to fly away and didn't have anything else to keep it down?

I hate abstract art. "Hey, I leaned a board against a balloon! Give me some money!" I don't think you know what abstract art is. Just saying.

I hate abstract art. "Hey, I leaned a board against a balloon! Give me some money!" What pisses me off is when people read pretention into things. Who ever mentioned anything about the balloon-plank being anything more than an interesting contraption? I think it looks interesting and kind of fun. Many abstract things can be interesting in various ways. If people start saying "this is really important and profound" about abstract things, that can (and should) often be made fun off. But today, the even worse cliché is the "ha-ha, abstract things are so stupid" as a way to feel superior to something. Many abstract things can capture profound meanings and feelings. The best example would probably be instrumental music.

You can fuse artistic meaning into pretty much anything, and that is what makes an effective artist, how well they can do that. Clearly this man is not a crafstman, and since craft is the vocabulary of the artist...All I can say is that the meaning of this piece is stiff.

I think that some abstract art is beautiful. But I wonder about it.
