Just checked.. at least on my computer (MacBook Pro, OS X 10.6.2, running Parallels Desktop 5.0.9308), Parallels does support VBOs.  Looking at the changelogs for Parallels, it looks like it's supported VBOs since at least major version 4.

Interesting. I wonder if I'm just playing old tapes, or if it has something to do with the underlying hardware.  I'll look into it.

Good understanding of 3D math helps. For this I recommend Euclidean Space.

For OpenGL, Song Ho's page is excellent.
