Hello Smiley
i need very small characters for a cell phone game i try to make...
the characters should be customizeable and should be able to "transport emotions". so the face should be as distinguishable as possible. i created a chibi like test sprite. but in my opinion it looks too childish, a little bit too clumsy and maybe even ugly ^^:

some even less polished characters with the same style

do you have any tips/help/criticism for me? maybe some inspirational sprites with dimensions arround 15x30? I think one of my main problems is the hair...

thank you!

If you're trying to avoid 'chibiness', then I'd go for an even less cartoonish style. Then again, I didn't notice the bit about the face needing to be clearly distinguishable/emotive, so maybe this edit isn't ideal. Either way, you might go for a more dynamic pose, just to spice things up a bit.

EDIT:
In cleaning my hard drive, I lost the edit I made of this. Pity.

Kevin is badass.

Anyway, if you're going all out for chibli, you might wanna consider look at sprite from the SNES RPG like Final Fantasy VI or Dragon Quest series. They have giant head which you gives you enough space to draw an expression, and the body is expressive enough.

indeed Smiley

@Kevin
thank you very much. your edit is a great inspiration. i hope i can manage to create something similar with a slightly bigger face.

well i think i have to clarify myself. i don't like chibi figures that much (i like them in JRPGs but not in western games -> that brings me to an idea: maybe i will take a look at secret of evermore). i already used a chrono trigger character as inspiration Smiley. i could not imagine a figure (as small as possible) that can show emotions without a chibi look. that is why i started this thread.

edit: mmh soe sprites look very similar to chrono trigger...

I'd suggest to try avoiding straight vertical and horizontal lines.  It changed my life.
