the position of 'cutscene artist' has sort of been cursed for a while;
harlockhero started it, did most of the art that is contained in the
linked zip, then he got lazy and did nothing for the game for 1.5
years (the game has been in production since may of 2007), then the
musician's friend wanted to do it, he drew one portrait, then vanished
from the internet without telling us and backed out of the position
when asked about it. another of the musician's friends volunteered,
then backed out when she said she had too much schoolwork.
will you be the one to break this curse??
your work would be, first, to replace the cutscenes images and
portraits contained in
this zip file with superior versions
and second to do any future cutscene images required for the
game. png is preferred due to no lossy jpg artifacts, sizes of
portraits must be 100x100, sizes of the cutscenes can vary but must be
less than about 600x250 or so, and can vary greatly in size; think of
them as manga-esque frames, depicting actions in the story. both have
no limitations in number of colors etc. -- i reserve the right to
approve/reject of any individual image you send and to send it back to
you asking for changes, but usually i'll leave it up to you to decide
what's good or not, because i know that usually the people who make
stuff have a better eye for it than i do
optimally, i'm imagining cutscenes would work like they do in phantasy
star 4, as in this ending:
basically, small rectangular images which pop up during dialogue
payment would be:
1) some nominal amount per cutscene, say, $20-$40, depending on the
size and complexity of the individual image, which is all i can
afford right now; i realize this is far below the going rate for
professionals, but maybe one of you likes the game and doesn't mind
smaller pay
2) a percent of the sales of the game, when it's done.
we haven't decided on final percents, but depending on the amount of
work you contribute it'll be somewhere between 2.5% and 7.5%. i don't know
how many sales to expect, but by comparison immortal defense has sold
had about $15000 in sales over the last 2.5 years, selling about 3000
copies total (at normal price and during special sales events), so if
SD sells exactly the same as ID that would be 375$-1125$ over 2.5 years,
paid out in small monthly amounts -- so unless the game does much
better than the last one this isn't going to be a significant amount
of money

http://rinku.livejournal.com/tag/saturated+dreamersnote that contrary to derek's warning about people seeking people to
do all the work for no pay up front, i've been making games for 15
years, and am doing the programming, design, and a lot of the writing,
and some of the art, and all of the sound design, and have been
working on the game for nearly three years so far with a team of five.
(i also work on the game every single day; check the changelog link.)
and that i've completed a commercial game before and have been paying
the team who made that game royalties over the last 2.5 years so there's
less fear that i'll up and vanish. but still, yes, basically it's 'work
for almost no money up front on a promise'
anyone interested please send me previous work / portfolio to look over;
the more work the better (since having done a lot shows that you can be
productive as opposed to being able to make one or two pretty pictures,
since i don't want the curse of the SD cutscene artist... to continue...)
