In amidst all the amazement for the IGF Awards, ThePodunkian sneaked out his preview over here. First Impression? It's really slick, and really slippy. Some pretty cool moments already, but I'm barely into it. Go Get!

I made a post, but it's gigantorous and I don't got time to pare it down at the moment... I think it's gonna be real good, though. (The game.)

Hmm. Can't seem to get gamepad control to work quite right. Everything functions except jump, no matter what button I set it to or which gamepad I use. Jumping is kind of integral to the game. :-)
Anyone else had this problem? Suggestions?

Hm... Get back from misc. school activity, come back to the dorm, and say "Ok, I'm really gonna do some heavy studying. Lemme just quickly check the TIGSource forum for any IGF news...". See this thread. Come in my pants.
I'm downloading it now, and throwing all other plans out the fucking window.
Thanks TIGSource. You just lowered my grades... again.

Played. It's like playing Cave Story for the first time. This is great stuff.
By the way - my life has new meaning.
Thank you!

Had another few spare minutes to finish it. Cool boss fight. It still feels a bit slide-y and fast, but I never died because of it. I didn't want it to end so soon

I love the movement! This is sort of quick acceleration is what I was trying to suggest for guy balding... I guess it wouldn't quite fit GB as well, but some feel of accelerating would be nice.
I liked this a lot. Would kind of like the save points/restart markers to be more frequent, because I'm a lilly livered kinda guy. Well written, all the way.

I really liked the start of the game, but then it became kinda hard. Might just be me though considering I am not too good with platformers. Gonna try more tonight.

It's a really great game on the whole, but after you've played it for a while, you start to notice all these small... "Niggles", that just... Annoy you, because they're there. I'm talking about small silly things, like the poor word-wrapping, awkward sound/graphic effects, the way you can't quickly spin around and shoot an enemy behind you because of the inertia, the rocket explosion (which was just disappointing), the titlescreen music, etcetera... Of course, it was just an early demo, but I really hope he'll put some time into getting rid of those small annoyances The boss was pretty average IMO. A bit too easy, but maybe the first boss isn't always supposed to be very difficult

Faster text skipping would be nice, too. I read pretty fast.
I do like how there are pauses built into the text printing for the sake of drama. Very nice. Shouldn't get in the way of usability, though. If in doubt, let 'em skip.

::sigh:: I'll just say this: Cave Story would not be the same game if it moved like this. OK, I'm saying this too: This feels amateurish and loose compared to Cave Story. Not by a whole lot -- I mean, it doesn't really damage the play experience. But it does add to the whole Pixel's-style-but-with-less-finesse vibe goin' on. And although it is "more responsive," it has less control. It's harder to land jumps, it's easier to run into things you shouldn't, and you can't fire in a given direction until you wait for him to decelerate and turn around. SO THAT'S WHAT I HAVE TO SAY :D I love the movement! This is sort of quick acceleration is what I was trying to suggest for guy balding... I guess it wouldn't quite fit GB as well, but some feel of accelerating would be nice.
I don't understand... Are you saying GB doesn't accelerate fast enough, or that he does too fast? 'Cause there is acceleration in there. You'd feel the difference if you played it without. And I did slow it down a bit recently... though not by much -- it's still only about 1/10th of a second. You'll notice it more when you're slipping on ice. Heh, I'd noticed the text wrapping as well... wouldn't be hard to fix IMO
In MMF (at least, as I remember it), it was always the littlest things that were a nightmare to fix.

When I make games in MMF I made the line breaks myself. You learn where you need to add them.
Also, I make skippable pauses, dammit.
I agree about the whole feel of "want to be CS but does like all fan games and never reaches the goal".
