Intro:

Hello, friends.

So, I'm willing to bet that every game developer here of any kind has had hundreds(if not thousands) of fleeting ideas, not all of which get written down. I know I have, and I know that some of these ideas stick with you as your "pet ideas". Pet ideas aren't always appealing to people besides their creator. That's why game ideas are so rarely stolen. So, when I ask for a team here, please, only apply (but don't hesitate to post other things) if you feel like this is interesting to YOU, not just me.

Summary:

The idea so far is called "Model Citizen". It's an RPG/Platformer hybrid, but when I say RPG, I mean branching storylines based on decisions, and free-to-roam worlds being the major (if not the only) RPG elements. As for platforming, the whole game is a 2d jumping sidescroller, with one added gameplay mechanic: New laws are announced either on signposts, or through an audio system, which make doing certian things in the game illegal. If you proceed to do them anyway, various enemies spawn and attack you. It is set in 2101 A.D. with an alternate timeline, where, in a way, world peace has been achieved.

Story

Dialogue choices (a la bioware) and random crazy acts (a la GTA) all make the story go in different directions. There are some minor effects, and some that branch off the main plot. The whole game is a "widen your perspective" style look at the whole commercialism idea. But anyway, everything from the start to the end of the quotes is taken directly from a design document I wrote up on February 10th, as to give the best explanation.

"         Model Citizen game concept

Backstory:

After his parents were killed by terrorists in 2001, 10 year old Francis Redro swore that he would create order in the world. So, wasting no time, in 2044 he became president of the U.S., and declared war on every other country on earth. He succeeded in making every continent except North and South America uninhabitable due to Radiation, and conquered everywhere else, as to make the geographical size of his new society easier to control. This new society, called New Earth, was VERY tightly regulated. Life went on...

Story:

The player has just come of age. They choose which subsidiary of The Togethearth Corporation they want to apprentice to: Health, Lifestyle, Transportation or Security. People who want to work independently (called Indies by society) are arrested. The player meets a hiding society of indies, and must decide what to do.
"

So, yeah. I need some help with the story as well.

Design and Feel

I've done some rough sketches of the art style that I'll upload when I get the chance to scan them. It's a very flat, smooth, style, mad of all straight lines. The vibe that the game should give is not quite depressing, but not quite happy either. What I mean by that, is that the game should make people somewhat existential.

What I need:

Voice actors (at least 3, we may have one)
Programmers (please help me decide the platform, it doesn't have to be flash or XNA)
Artists:
  • Story Writers (me and vxthebear)
  • Animators
  • Musicians (bauer and possibly jumpstart)

I am a little bit of each of the previous, except the musician part.

Update: We're making progress in the artist department. Now for the code monkeys. Tongue

Production will really get going with a programmer, and all I really know how to program in is Game Maker, which only makes .EXE files.

Conclusion

This is all subject to change, but I think this would be a good experience for everyone involved in any way. Gamer or developer alike.

The (best) current sketch for a possible game screen can be found here (it still sucks): http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb120/Ectoplasmus/model_citizen_sketch_1.jpg

A nicely formatted post makes me quite happy. I'd be willing to help with writing/design. I did some very simple dialogue trees for an Aquaria MOD called Sacrifice. I've been wanting to explore branching narrative a bit more recently and collaborating on something would be awesome. Take a look through my portfolio and if you like what you see drop me a message.

I think this sounds like a really cool and interesting idea! I'd love to help out with some music, please take a look at www.bauair.se for some examples.

I'm sorry, you are absolutely right. I was thinking in terms of my (very limited) programming experience. Embarrassed But if someone else is willing to program in a language that can run on at least 2 platforms (I guess anything that can go on any desktop/laptop and/or a gaming console), I'm all ears. Come to think of it, I can barely program at all, so... Beg

I just thought, that if you want programmers to do stuff for you, you should let them choose as well.

Perhaps he wanted it to be either web-based or playable on a console. Nothin' wrong with that. Flash and XNA also have pretty damn big presences and gaming communities; I don't even remember the last time I saw a Java game. He has as much say over what platform he wants the game built on as what artistic style he wants the graphics.

However, his platform choice is not anywhere close to his biggest problem. He is looking for a team of people to create his entire game for him (even the story!) without any pay. Good luck with that! CheesyHand Thumbs Up Right

I like the story and the concept. Looking forward to see some sketches. I was searching for collaboration for new games as composer/sounddesigner; I recently updated my website (in signature) so if you like my works and need some help, contact me.

Man, don't take this in the wrong way, but I think you should work on smaller projects before you try to tackle something like this.  This is the kind of project that will take you more than a year to complete, and if you're still just starting off as a programmer/artist/etc not only is your proficiency in all of those areas going to drastically change before you're done, but so are your tastes and goals within this project.  That, and people are going to be pretty leery about joining your game concept if they don't think you're going to be pulling the majority of the weight.

I'm not saying don't make this game, I'm just saying don't make it yet.
And trust me, everyone here has terrific concepts for games that they can't make yet.

Oh, I agree. Seeing as this is just a concept right now, and I've been making small things for a while, I wanted to see how I'd work in a team. It's experimental in nature. And don't worry, I do intend to pull my own weight.  Tongue If necessary, I'll put it on hold.

Not me. Well, it's just that it is so awesome that I can't even figure out how to put it in words.

The closest anyone has gotten to that is Sos with ghbrvlowabrvfladberogvlwrvfwlo games.

Work a prototype out, Solidplasma! One level, basic gameplay, whatever, something to illustrate your ideas and show off your own competencies. That should make gathering the team easier. Wink

That's.... a REALLY good idea! Finally, my game maker skills game maker put to good use! The first version will look and sound like crap, but It'll illustrate the "laws" mechanic well. I'll get to work right away!  Grin
