How well do you know your video games?
The game features more than 300 levels
ranging from triple A titles to small Indie Games.
Can you name those games with a single screenshot?

Try it out!

GAMEPLAY TRAILER

******************************************
(original post)

Introducing GEEK MIND!

As I was learning Actionscript, I almost jumped right in programming for Anything Beats Everything, but I was a little afraid of the task at hand. So I decided I should make a simple little game to test my skills.

Then I started the Guess the Game! thread here on TIGForums, and as I was making levels I realized that this could very well make a fun, simple game, AND it wouldn't be too hard to code!

I have made Geek Mind quickly, learning the ropes at the same time. Some issues are still left to fix, like preloading and sound looping/mutig in Actionscript, but I'm still quite proud at what I can do now. A few months back, I had no idea how to code a simple Hello World!

Creating Geek Mind was an exciting challenge, and now I can't wait to take on bigger projects!

p.s. The music in the trailer and in the game is I HEART VOLTAGE from TRASHAPPY on the 8bitcollective!

You shouldn't blur/change the game snippets as in screen #2, it makes it fucking hard to indentify the game behind.

Yeah I'll use the best picture I've got. This was mostly a test.

PHEW!
I just created 268 levels for this game... That was a lot more work than I thought it would be. I've got games from pretty much every console cycle in there, from colecovision to the iPhone. I think the game will be difficult - unless you really know your gaming stuff. Do you think you're up to the task?

Sorry about the double reply, but here, the new look of Geek Mind!

I changed the palette of the game, to make it a bit more serious. I also created 268 levels, which are being integrated in the code right now, by me, at 1AM.

Things done:

    * Simple intro
    * Hint system
    * Skip button with points penalty
    * Mascot
    * Game Over screen

Things to do:

    * Polish (buttons, interface)
    * TransitionAnimation
    * Sounds
    * Music
    * Squash that Game Over bug you keep getting!
    * Integrate levels (writing answers and hints)
    * Make the remaining 32 levels to have a round total of 300!
    * Create a trailer!
    * Release the game!

Alright, back to work!

.... OR off to bed.  Epileptic

Man, it seems like everything you touch turns to gold. It's incredible how you've made me that hyped for a video game quiz and a spot the odd one out game.

Please make sure the name checking has a few different answers. It'd suck if I lost points for not puttin a comma in Ben There Dan That.

Yup, I've got 10 slots for answers, and I'm checking for comma mistakes, space mistakes, missing exclamation marks (Super Punch Out!!), numbers (4 and IV) and subtitles. I've set it so it turns text into caps and answers are only caps.

Thanks man Smiley I hope you'll enjoy the games as much as the hype! Haha! I'm now at 348 levels, inputting their answers in the code. It is taking forever, but this week-end I have 12 hours of bus travel to get to my family so... I'll probably have it done by next week!

BTW isn't "gamer mind" more appropriate?
Unless you start having super heroes, C++, DnD and star trek trivia

You might be right about that. I'll add a subtitle, like Geek Mind: Games, so I can make sequels with different topics, like Geek Mind: Comics, or Geek Mind: Programming... Maybe. Someday.  Shrug

What! My games are really basic and small, they're not awesome and stylish XBLA games like yours!

The thing is I'm learning Actionscript right now, and I don't want to rush into a big ambitious project head on, so I do smaller, simpler games one at a time. After I complete Geek Mind, I'm getting back on the Anything Beats Everything train 100%. It's still a relatively small game, but I want to do cool things with it and do them well.

I'll do more Geek Mind/Reel Mind between larger projects, I think.

How lax is the typing-stuff-in system?

Would it accept a title without proper punctuation?

Common acronyms/shorthands?

D:

looks + sounds pretty awesome though

EDIT :: Oh, and I'm really glad you did away with capitalization for the entry field. Bleh. Thank you! :D Even if it was just because it makes things easier for you, it's still a good thing to do.

I have ten answer slots named currentLevelAnswer and numbered 1 to 10. I enter a bunch of possible answers until I'm satisfied - sometimes it's only one, for things like Portal or Spelunky, but sometimes it's 10...

Here's an example:
   currentLevelAnswer="SUPER MARIO BROS. 2";
   currentLevelAnswer2="SUPER MARIO 2";
   currentLevelAnswer3="SUPER MARIO BROS 2";
   currentLevelAnswer4="MARIO BROS 2";
   currentLevelAnswer5="MARIO BROS. 2";
   currentLevelAnswer6="SMB2";

I'll have a trailer up tonight!

The release should come this week. I still have a list of things to do:

- Make a clean "game over" and "play again"
- Make a preloader
- Make the music loop properly (and put the music credits in the game)
- Round up the total number of levels to 500 and input the remaining answers

Later!

I have completed development on Geek Mind! Over 400 levels, 4 difficulty levels, music, sounds, hints and multiple answers... All done!

The game is up on Flash Game License for now, so for those who own a FGL account, you can go and play a preview of Geek Mind right now! Otherwise, I have to wait a couple days to be approved on FGL and see if anyone's interested in getting a license for it. If I don't get any news soon, I'll just release the game free to play on my blog. ^_^
