I have absolutely no artistic ability whatsoever. I was wondering if there was a place where I could download pre-rigged human figure models and such. I'd like to play around a little bit with third person melee combat systems in Unity 3D, but I have trouble building and modeling a stick figure. I'm also a little over cautious about ripping assets out of other games even if it is for my own personal use.

Any suggestions?

Turbosquid used to have some available for free. Lots of them cost money, but they may still have some free characters. However they are usually pretty high in the polygon count as they are aimed at rendered stuff rather than in game models. Have you looked on forums like blender's forums, maybe some maya/max forums? I imagine they might have collaborative areas for learning to develop games where people offer up assets for use, like the collab section here with 2d assets.

http://opengameart.org/ probably has what you're looking for, but I think they require your game to be free or open source.

I developed a system called UniHuman a while ago, it may be what you need. (Depends on Blender 3D as an exporter at any rate)

Its about a year old as  project. I may return to it over the summer to update it a bit but it is still quite versatile and can create a wide range of human models very quickly and easily at game count levels. Rigged models are made though more extreme models (such as very short or tall models) may require minor adjustment.

Hope it helps!

I'm also a little over cautious about ripping assets out of other games even if it is for my own personal use.

While ripped models can be useful for learning modeling technique they are in general to be avoided because
-1 you get attached to them and may want to use them in a work (which is a no no)
-2 others get attached to them. If people see your project as a fan game they will have strong positive or negative opinions and the project (for example Ocarina of Time 2D) can haunt you for years.

There's a program I discovered once called "Posers," it's a 3D art program specifically designed for human character models. It works basically like your standard "Create a xxx" mode, like you see in many wrestling games (or Guitar Hero, later Soul Calibrs, or some action games). I don't think it's freeware, but it may be worth looking into.

Ryzom just opened almost all of it's assets under the creative commons share alike license.
