Hai guys, give me an hand with this.
I'm starting a small breakout project, how convoluted you would say, it's just a little idead that crossed my mind at airport, I can do it in a few days, so I said, meh, why not.
OK, now the main course.
I jus't cant' decide between these two graphical styles.
First one is pretty simple, unlimited colors, 160*240, nothing more really.

Second one is something more. It tought of a low-spec game playing on a imaginary game-boy like system. It's 96*96 (128 with the frame) and wanted to stick with 16 colors (Arne's palette in screen, may change). I tought of a possible series of quick games (maybe one-a-week or things like that) all labeled under this imaginary handheld, maybe with the animation of a boy putting the cartridge on (OK, maybe I am going too far ahead.)

The second one, by far. Has much more charm plus I'm a sucker for fake handhelds. If you don't do the animation of the boy putting a cartridge in, at least do a bootup logo animation like GameBoy or Neo Geo Pocket Colour.

Second one definitely looks better. Though really, the only thing putting me off of the first one is the gray background. A simple pattern and a little color would go a long way.

Actually, it doesn't have a background. It is game maker default room back color.

That first one reminds more of those crappy early Windows 3.1 games. They'd always just slap the game in a window with no proper background and put the score in the titlebar. I guess I'm trying to say I prefer the second one, although the first would be ok with a little extra visual punch.

Definitely the second, flat grey is boring boring boring.

Though I'd still tweak the second's background a bit to make sure it doesn't clash with the foreground when everything is in motion.

Yeah that 2nd mockup has some serious class. I'd for sure go with that one.

Well, guys, how do I put it? The 1st one wasnt intended to have no background, it is just a heavy WIP.

...Ok, polished out it would be like this. Got it?

EDIT: oh, what the hell. Polished the second one as well.
Let the blood flow.

Still prefer the second one. First one looks like any one of the 3000000 Breakout clones out there. Second just shows more style and personality, in no small part because of the fake handheld screen.

But we're all huge suckers for stuff like that around here so take it with a grain of salt. Tongue

Still the second one. Do you need more convincing? Like, do I need to show my tits for you to choose the second one or something?

spoiler: I dont have tits.

The first one. The fruity blocks on the drab background reflects the bittersweet nature of the game. You can hit those blocks over and over only for so long before you start thinking about why you are even alive.
