For hundreds of years, England has repulsed its viking invaders. Despite their crazy beards and wicked axes, vikings have never been able to conquer this small island. So how could a bunch of tea-sipping pansies stop the manliest army the world has ever seen? Because vikings didn't have bazookas, that's how. Until now! Viking Bazooka Bloodbath will be a fast-paced 2d fighter/platformer where you get to slaughter endless hordes of English knights and bowmen. The game is essentially complete, consisting of four game modes and three arenas. At this point, I don't have time to add much more content, but I can still make small changes, so make sure you share your thoughts! Move and jump with the arrow keys, and attack with 'z' and 'x'. Don't get hit twice in a row, or its game over. DownloadIf, for some reason, that version doesn't work, you can download a slightly older version here.

I like how you opted for historical accuracy. Great beard, too!

The formation of the still-living knights on that image looks kinda like the shape of Britain, minus Northern Ireland.

You may have noticed that in the earlier screen shots there's no HUD. There won't be one. I've moved away from a standard hit point system and created something I think is superior for this game.
When hit, you're considered hurt for about half a second. During that time, any additional hits will kill you. In other words, no single hit can kill you; only two consecutive hits in a short time frame will cause your death. This should promote riskier play, since one little mistake will probably not have any lasting consequences.

Of course, the bazooka can fire more than one type of shot.

I've finished a demo which includes most of the game's core mechanics. Check it out and tell me what you think. Move and jump with the arrow keys, and attack with 'z' and 'x'. Don't get hit twice in a row, or its game over. Download Link

I don't know if this is your programming genius or chaotic dynamics but the controls for this are so sick it's great. Please let some knight bodies stack up. Love that the beam shot pushes you back off of platforms. Sometimes the viking can stand in mid-air just off the edge of platform. Tried to get a screenshot for you but I kept dying too quickly and going to the high-score . I can't wait for sound.

Man, this is awesome! I can't quite figure out what triggers laser-shotgun though, but I like how you had a different attack for up+z and stuff. Also, GM6 alert! Should probably patch it so us vista users can be happy. Other than that though this is great!

This is cool. I don't like how he's not falling when I attack mid-air though.

Nice! But you might want to consider assigning the jump ability to the 'x' button, and make the close combat automatic with 'z' when the character is in contact with an enemy (especially since you link some special moves with up-'z'). Also, you should make an enemy that fires projectiles, like an crossbowman or something, to prevent the player from just settling in a corner and repeatedly firing upwards(or you could make the up shot damaging to the player when it explodes, forcing him to stay on the move). I really like the large shot(shooting downwards is fun, try to lower the gravity a bit on the main character, could really open some styles there). Keep it up!

I think you've found some fun. Nice one!
The "two hits" health system kinda reminds me of Halo, in so much as you only die if you sustain damage over a short period of time. What Halo has that you're missing though is feedback for when you're near to death. I think it'd really help to show more explicitly both when the player is hit, and when the player is one hit from death.
