Pigeon Racing
Description
The elegant sport of pigeon racing has been handed down through the time since 5000 BC. You are a proud owner of a team of racing pigeons. Breed, train, and race your pigeons. Aim to win the prestigious race for control of the Pigeon World Cup!
Expected Gameplay In races it'll be a side scrolling race against other pigeons and obstacles. Holding up will move your pigeon's wings up, holding down will beat them down, and holding shift increases the power of each beat. Each race you'll win money based on your position in the race, which you'll spend on new pigeons or special pigeon steroids feed. You'll then be able to train your pigeons and/or breed them. Using only these controls and your training you'll fight against the best pigeon breeders the world over!

Thanks Inanimate and Melly. I got basic AI working! Here's two of them. The player (for now?) is yellow. http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh236/Galaxy613/pr_screenshot02.pngThe weird fading effect happens when you use your pigeon's BOOST ability. I need to help the AI use it better, or dumber in some cases.

Suggestion: let the player choose what color he wants to be.

I plan to. When you start the game you'll be able to choose your color and the name of your stable. So I banged my head until I got parallax working for the mile stones. I also got the finish line flags working. Would people be interested in playing the demo? IMHO it looks a lot better in motion.

Updated first post with the [0.1] build. Instructions also in the first post. The main menu has a load option. but it doesn't do anything yet. I may add a "help" option too... The game does loop, so once you win, lose, or quit a race by pressing Escape, you'll go back to the main menu and you can go again. But yeah, any feedback would be great. The player is still yellow, and you start out in 2nd...

Hmm, I am wondering how complex should the breeding/training/metagame mechanics be? Should it be a simple or somewhat complex?
Simple would be like, breeding would just take the basic qualities of the parents and make a new bird for free. Training would be like racing but except against the clock or something. Or maybe something more cartoony and have a bench-press minigame.
Complex would be like: Each bird has it's own age (I need to find out the average lifespan of one of these guys) and keep track of time and stuff so when you breed a new pigeon, they aren't instantly useable but you have to wait a year or something, and eventually your pigeons die. Each pigeon will have personality traits associated with them instead of just strength and stamina.
Or maybe a balance between the two?

This is really fun, though i find it a little too hard. I haven't won yet, but i don't really mind because i seem to be winning $5k just for losing haha.
I like the sound of the simpler idea, you could incorporate seperate training for different stats. For example, if you had a stat called "Flap Strength" it could be trained by flying through hoops.
Also, apparently max pigeon lifespan is 35 years.

Thanks for testing. Yeah I'll be tweaking the controls of the pigeons so it's a bit easier if you aren't on the ball at the start. The separate training idea is good, currently there's two stats, Strength and Stamina. Strength increases the power of the down beat and Stamina increases how long you can keep up the beating. I'll like to keep them from being grindfests though somehow.. I'm not sure if I will let the pigeons die, but they will definetly be sellable.
