Monkey Freak: Ape-Sanity!

Description

Original: Monkey Freak

This started off with me making the characters into 2d sprites and from that point I decided to make a platforming game inspired by the original Megaman series for the NES (specifically the Heat Man stage from MM2 with the vanishing blocks).

I had a few different mechanics planned, but due to the short dev time for this entry I stuck with just the single mechanic for now. Sadly not even the scientists or the mouse got in the game outside of the cast screen!

The music is an awesome track taken from the cult classic NES game Journey to Silius.

Game was developed using Flixel.

Apologies to Chris Zamanillo for any unintentional similarities to his game. I saw the other Monkey Freak game, but avoided looking at it until my game was fairly set. Funny enough it looks Chris also incorporated the vanishing blocks gameplay into game.

Great game, though. I think this is the straightest interpretation of a cartridge I have seen so far. You translated the art into pixels excellently; it looks great. I like the music, too.
It's short, but you didn't have a lot of time, so that's understandable.

Thanks for the compliments on the art! I'm actually really interested in adding a few more levels and working on implementing some of the features I had to cut to make it into the compo. I figure there's a workable structure for a fun time attack game in here.

Your game title on the first post reads Ascenso.

Ha, that's what I get for lazily copying-pasting the format for the first post. Fixed!

I love the style. Great game!

In lvl 5 it's impossible for me to jump up even to the banana, so I couldn't get past that point.

Hey JaJitsu, how well does the game run on your computer? If you hit the tilde (~) key and console should roll down and you'll get a framerate number in the corner. You should be able to jump up precisely a little over 3 blocks high so the banana should be in reach.

Good stuff, nice and polished. I might try speedrunning this after I've played some more games.

Uh-oh, I had the same problem as @Jajitsu, can't get past "TIMING". I did hit the tilde to bring up the console, and it seems to be around 60fps, occasionally dipping to 40fps or so.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I think I figured out the issue with the jumping and uploaded a new version of the game (along with an additional stage at the end). Let me know if that fixes the issue!

Nice sound and graphics, clean design, little fun game! Beer! I just don't like up arrow for jumping  Huh? also I always hated this kind of timed blocks on Mega Man games Cheesy because, well, I'm impatient and I think it would be better if you didn't have to wait that long for the blocks to appear/disappear, but that's probably a death wish.  Big Laff

This is a good, solid entry. The graphics are nice and fit the game/cart well. New elements are introduced at a good rate and the difficulty curve is pretty much spot on. Good work.
