regarding navigation i think a alt + mouse1/mouse2/mouse3 would work best this is the way its set up in maya, this is also in dire need of a framing option example: hit the f key to frame up on the object and make the objects center where the camera is facing and rotates around.

A line tool would be great for this as well.

alt + mouse1 = rotate
alt + mouse2 = zoom
alt + mouse3 = pan

This just won "the suggestion of the day" award.

I'd like to put a vote in for the camera controls too! It makes it a lot easier working on a laptop.

Add an option (like space + mouse1) for those using a trackpad or a mouse pad with no middle button, too, though. I'm so glad GIMP has this as an option to using the middle mouse button.

You can texture paint directly in Blender, and I think there are palette add-ons available as well.

Google summer of code added some amazing stuff to Blender like better layer and palette support for texture painting.

This guy has some nice videos explaining some similar features.

This is probably a REALLY not advised thing to do, but you can just select the faces, press U, and select Smart UV Project or Lightmap Pack to condense the faces onto the map. Seems like Smart UV Project keeps in mind the shape of the faces and overall size of each in reference to the others.

It works alright for simpler objects - you'll probably still need to tweak it if you don't want visible seams or if you have a more complex mesh. It also won't have contiguous faces, but it could be fine for low poly objects.

That^
But I highly suggest tackling that dislike head on because good UV wrapping can really make a difference!

oh i hand uv map on a regular basis i just dont enjoy dong it, so boring.

But when i uv map i usually just paint in Photoshop instead of directly in blender.I only use blenders painting system when i work on speed models.
