I don't know if it was ever done, but I would like to compile a list of games that feature the most impressive pixel art. So tell me what would be your ULTIMATE example, and maybe 2-3 contenders... My choices are: Best: Mega Man 6 (NES) Honorable mention: Soldier Blade (TGFX16) Seiken Densetsu 3 (SNES) Boktai (GBA)

It's not out yet, but I think that Fez's pixel art is top notch. It's simplistic, yet aesthetic.

I repent. Made an edit to the first post. So, what are your choices?

Megaman 6, SD3 and Boktai. Fantastic choices. Let's be best friends! Personally, I find Kirby's adventure to be top notch, especially for the backgrounds and how detailed and memorable they are. Drill Dozer also stands pretty high with me. And obviously everyone's favourite, Yoshi's Island. Edit: Just though I'd note that Boktai is my absolute favourite, but I don't wanna repost your games. :V

I'm thinking Keyser Soze has a real fetish for that Flashback old pixel style of trying to emulate realistically proportioned characters.

@Keyser Sore I think Fallout 2 is pre-rendered 3d stuff, so it doesn't really count as pixel art. I totally agree with you on OoTW though. Secret of Mana has some stellar pixel art: As does Final Fantasy VI:

I thought out of this world/another world was vector stuff, it just looked pixeled since there weren't no AA or anything?

That Tactics Ogre screenshot is gorgeous. Is that the PSX version?

real art looks like the mona lisa or a halo poster and is about being old or having your wife die and sometimes the level goes in reverse

Given the resolution of the image, I would say that it's the PSP version. SNES and GBA versions of this game also look awesome. They basically all used the same graphics -/+ some lighting effects and color adjustments.

Guilty Gear's sprites are too big for my tastes. It loses what I love so much about pixel art, which is using small amounts of pixels to suggest a lot of detail.

I'm surprised nobody's mentioned Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga! I really love the bright and colorful take on the Mario world, and the residents of BeanBean Kingdom were delightfully charming with some very nice animation. It's already been posted, but Boktai has some GORGEOUS pixel art. I love the little zombies and the walk they make.

As earlier mentioned, The Metal Slug series have fantastic animation and pixel art. In my opinion they're easily the best-looking games out there. While I agree, that crab bot is a pretty bad example. Look at those fucking ugly arms and especially the pincers. Dear god
