As earlier mentioned, The Metal Slug series have fantastic animation and pixel art. In my opinion they're easily the best-looking games out there.

While I agree, that crab bot is a pretty bad example. Look at those fucking ugly arms and especially the pincers. Dear god
I agree that the arms aren't nice, but the pincers look decent. It's just the rotated jagginess that bothers me, and the animation on the back finger. Could it be that the artists were trying to emulate depth of field by leaving them blurry like that?  Shrug

It's likely that they've just scaled and rotated the sprite a bit so the limb moves fluidly.

Metal Gear: Ghost Babel

Ghost Babel had the best looking fucking portraits ever in the Metal Gear series. Period.

Yaaa but I can nominate pre-emptively can't I? =0 I normally don't involve myself in american politics but I do believe game begins at conception, or at least at pixel-art!

It's not out yet, but I think that Fez's pixel art is top notch. It's simplistic, yet aesthetic.

Also: I agree about fez, the pixel art is super nice...

I'm sure y'all mean trixel art.

A couple of additions from me:

Golden Sun 1 & 2

Shantae: Risky's Revenge

It's not out yet (are we having a rule for that?) but from what I've seen it looks gorgeous.

Legend of Princess

Sonic 3

Sonic gets bonus points for using lots of palette swapping.

I think I might be in the extreme minority in that I don't mind "impure" pixel art. That is, Messhof's rotated pixels and that sprite's bluriness really don't bug me.

I feel the same way. I love when games take nice pixel art and add a bunch of more modern post processing stuff like lighting/rotation/other crazy blend effects on top of it.

^ I kind of hate that. Capcom vs. SNK 2 comes to my mind.

Some of my favorites:

Art of Fighting

Kirby's Dreamland 3

Axelay - it was really difficult choosing one single pic for this game.

Super Mario Bros. 3

Samurai Shodown 3 - it's just an example, I loved how back in the day they had to draw custom chibi-sprites for the Game Boy fighters. It all ended with the GBA.

Street Fighter Alpha series. I think I've already mentioned how much I love the Alpha games, both in looks and gameplay.

We should have a thread for bad pixel art in games, I can think of a lot of games  Tongue

Zombies ate my Neighbors has amazing pixel art. Though that first picture there is actually Ghoul Patrol, which is pretty good too, but Zombies Ate My Neighbors is way better.  Wink

Golden Sun 1 & 2

as much as i love this series, i dont think any part of it was actually pixel art.  Undecided

also

Summon Night: Swordcraft Story has a wonderful style.

Guilty Gear, people.

There's a point for me where pixel art just stops looking very good. It CAN happen at 640x480, and it always happens above that. Also, I really don't like the art direction their games have to begin with.

King of Fighters 12 is one of the games where I absolutely adore the sprites and animation, while they're big. But I think the fact that they're quite large sprites, but then still 2x-ed helps retain the pixel look better.
