<<Play It!>>

Hello gents and ladies!

So after (what seemed to me to be interminable) delays, I have finally managed to release a new game!  It is called Haiku Hero, and it is very different from my last game.  There are no explosions or spaceships or bosses this time.  Instead, it's more about writing haikus.  Except you have a time limit.  And the haiku has to be about sharks.  Or maybe pigeons?  Oh, and you can't use the letter L anywhere either.

Or something.

The game revolves around trying to make haikus while under various constraints.  There is usually a time constraint, as well as several structural constraints.  (Have to use a certain word, etc.)

It's kind of an experiment, really.  The short version of the story is that I wanted to try to make a game where if you played it for a while, you ended up learning an actual, real-world skill, good for use in real-world parties.  (Yes, my idea of a great party is one that involves lots of people making haikus.  Clearly I throw the best parties.)

Anyway, have a look, and let me know what you think!

Cool idea! I think this would be an excellent multiplayer game, with you competing with other players to write the best haiku within the time limit.

very enjoyable! I wonder if the game could keep track of the top ten haikus somehow? Or perhaps a random list of the last ones made by everyone playing.

Thank you for the kind words!

Yeah, the top-ten thing is something I've been wondering about myself.  Have a "rate this haiku" function, where you can rate other peoples' haikus, and see the "Best ten of the day" or something?  I dunno.

May still see if I can't add that, since it seems like a popular idea.  We'll see!

Haha, awesome.

Yeah, it thinks it is cheating a bit if you use the same word too many times in a row.  That makes it angry.

Awesome.  Nice detour from your original shmups, although I hope that you make more of those too..

I should mention that the 8bitrocket forums have reopened recently, and they have a zone and threads dedicated to game discussion but with haiku since only 2 weeks ago, not that anyone has until now made a game of it.

The first thread was about the future of games on cd/dvd on consoles.
It may be good practise to sign up there and contribute to the 5-7-5 form that they insist on.

This reminds me of the haiku only channel in Kingdom of Loathing where you can only talk in haikus.

By the way, Montoli, you don't have a link to the songs that get played in the game do you?

Hmm.  I don't have them linked anywhere... yet.  But I probably could.  Let me double-check in with the person who did my audio (she is fantastic) and see if she minds if I just link straight to the MP3s.

So I checked in with my audio person, and their reaction was "sure!  Absolutely share the music if people are interested!"

So here.  Here is some music from Haiku Hero.

Music!

Enjoy!

I think the song needs to be looped a couple times. Seems a little short.

This is awesome fun. I had a really good run on hard survival mode:

Quote
remove jam from me
a spatula will help you
ram it up my ass

lean on me, i will
be strong for i am your friend
I'll help, and so on

barely got any
ideas left for haikus
fuck this malarkey

what is the deal with
asking me to illustrate
expectations now

in my tent you can
fist an octopus or you
can fuck right off mate

A couple of issues -

In my favourites, the first character of the last line is repeatedly coming up as a hyphen. I worry that if you try and tweet a favourite it won't come out right.

I'm having trouble copying the text from a mac - Flash isn't registering the apple-C command, I'm having to do it from the mouse. Could you include a copy text button please? I found a tutorial on the subject here:
