Nautica
is an adventure game set on the endless sea;
chronicling the exploits of Nathan Butler
as he sails around the Nautica Archipelago.

I'm slowly working on the visuals, as of this moment
I'm trying to get enough sprites done to be able to make
a prototype. Of course, I'm no coder. And Nautica needs
a coder. Badly.

NAUTICA has found it's coder! Mr. Droqen will be helping me turn these mockups into an actual game.

So here's what we're aiming for right now:
    Hand Thumbs Up Left Slow movement; think Another World, Flashback or to some extent, the original Prince of Persia. Meaning walking, sprinting, ducking, leaping, jumping, ledge grabbing, all that.
    Hand Metal Right Side-scrolling sailing.
    Hand Point Right Around five islands, half of them populated, for the player to explore.
    Hand Shake Left An overall very atmospheric experience.

I'll be putting pieces of pixel art here as I finish them.

looks damn cool, some points though:

his arms are too thin, I would say imcompatible with his build.
the sail on the boat is mirrored, i think.

will there be any sort of combat?

The thin arms remind me of the Superbrothers pixel style. I'm not bothered by them, and the sprite has a ton of charm.

I know at least 127 TIGglets that would cum buckets for a game like this.

Buckets.

What platform did you want to aim for? Flash? (sponsoring perhaps?)

This has to be made, it just has to.

@rdein:
Second time someone is mentioning the sail. I'll fix that ASAP.

As for combat, I'm not set on it. I do want to have a slow sort of combat; again, probably something like in Flashback. Not if it doesn't fit in with the rest of the game, though.

@allen:
I actually have no idea. I'm fine with any platform, really; I just want to get this done. It'll take a looong time, with me being a slow artist and the game being, well, rather big, but I want to get it done.

Though earning money off of this wouldn't be bad. Corny Laugh

Hand Thumbs Up Right WIP for the starting island:
Some more playing around with the visuals called for a change of palette, as there wasn't really any way of adding anything in that didn't result in eye-stabbing contrast using the highly saturated turquoise and cyan tones.

Now this works much better visually than the private eye one for me.  Hope you finish it.  Name doesn't really grab me due to similarity with Aquaria / Nausicaa though...

Makes me wish I had the skills so I'd have the honor of coding this.
But alas, I do not. I'll keep a very close eye on this sweet piece.

This looks really beautiful, is it going to be a point & click game or one where you move left & right on the keyboard?

Just a suggestion that would make this even sexier.

I think that the archipelago should be one giant circle that you traverse in either direction.

What I mean is, have all the other locations and islands pass by horizontally inverted in the distant parallax background as you sail, as if you are sailing around the rim of a giant ring.

It would give the world a real sense of depth.

@skarmachild:
Keyboard. There will be a healthy amount of platforming.

Wasn't that movie named NausicaƤ? I still haven't seen it. I will admit to using a lot of Ponyo and Porco Rosso as reference, though.

I kind of want to help. I'm a pretty good coder. This looks beautiful.
The sailing appears amazing. I want to know about how the sailing might work. Addicted

If Flash is an acceptable platform then maybe we should talk a little bit, Renton.

(but I can only imagine what sort of vision you have for it and maybe things won't turn out so magical -- we can do naught but try!)

Nausicaa is my favourite Miyazaki, and the comic is great too.  Highly recommend checking it out.
