I'm primarily a developer, although I do mostly my own art.  I'm trying to steadily get better at art, and I feel like I'm improving, but I consistently get a lot of criticism for my art.  So!  I was hoping that I could get some feedback from you folks on how to improve my artwork, especially in a pixel art context.

I just released "The Day," which I thought had my best artwork to date.  You can play it at: http://armorgames.com/play/6980/the-day to get a feel for how the art all works together.

I'd appreciate any advice you could give me on the art.  Below are some specific examples:

I'm quite proud of the Earthbound-inspired character art:

And likewise proud of the card art:

The background tiles are a bit rough, but I did my best:

Do I make any systemic mistakes?  Any tips you folks can give me in general?  Specific issues are welcome too, but I'm sure there are a lot of them.

Lacking quite a lot of contrast, and most of it is flat.
If you want to get better at pixel art, be sure to get better at drawing before. I suggest this.
Wait for someone else to give you more in-depth stuff

I agree with everything written before, plus try to work better with colors, no only choosing a fitting palette but also Shadows/lights and so on.

This guy have some great tutorials. This are in Portuguese, but images may help.

I can tell you did not dance anti-clockwise before attempting to art.
If you still have problems place a lucky horse shoe over your bed.

Hello

If you want to become better at pixelart, as written below, and in general, you need to be more dedicated, and the essence as pixelartist, is patience, alot of it, if not infinite Smiley

You need to spend atleast 2-3x more time on your stuff to get a better result...
