I always thought the NES palette was really ugly. Whoever designed this back then could have thought of a proper grayscale or a YELLOW. And is all that black space merely wasted?

Though I still find awesome what people can do with such colors.

Same here, that lack of yellow is really annoying IMO, it gives every game a brownish tint. I always thought NES games looked dirty.

Some people are into dirty...  Wink

Actually, a lot can be done with limited colors. Bionic Commando comes to mind. And don't forget Super Mario Bros 3. Wait, didn't SMB3 have a lot of yellow? Or is my memory playing tricks on me?

I'm pretty sure I never saw yellow in NES games. You had a lot of similar colors, though, and maybe your old TV set could have turned some of those colors more yellowish.

I wasn't raised with a NES so the nostalgia factor doesn't work for me  Wink

Yeah but brownish colors + NTSC= not pretty (for me)

maybe it's not even so much what palette you use as just working with any limited palette.  it can lead to better design decisions since you have to actively measure and weigh color decisions.  the prevalence of the NES palette is arbitrary/nostalgic but can lead to interesting stuff.

My memories of NES-era Mario games specifically are heavily tainted by Super Mario All-Stars; perhaps yours are too?

Well, maybe not *any* limited palette ...

Workin' with restriction is pretty fun but unfortunatly my results aren't that great. In fact, I'm a bit embarassed Tongue

Reagrding Super mario 3, no, there was no yellow and all the "yellow" colors were in fact orange. Check the original game out, you'll see that all colors are bright but no yellow is used at all. Even the original Mario bros featured only orange even tho there are shining coins. Pacman also had a weird color in the nes version (http://www.virtualnes.com/play/play.php?id=AC02&s=1).
