So, I'm updating the old Beginner's Guide to Indie Gaming. I have updated some broken links and left some observations. Since it has been a while since the thread was last updated, I believe there are several good games released more recently that didn't have a mention.

Since the old blog feature was lost, left to the abyss of the lost bits, and since, even though TIGdb is an awesome resource, some important games can end up not showing up in the first pages of the Top list, I decided to bring the old list back.

Like the old thread, the intention of this is one is not to list everyone's favorite indie games, but representatives of justic indie games in general. Variety is recommended.

Since the list is getting kind of overwhelmingly huge, a few games will be voted to be highlighted. This will happen in another thread.

You will notice that I added the People category. Since there are several good games from the same devs, even on this list, It would be nice to make a list of devs a newcomer should know about, with links for personal pages and/or list of works.

I'd be thankful if you post suggestions already formated like this:

Code:

For Games
[b][url=http://game/]Game Name[/url][/b] ([url=http://dev.site/]Dev Name[/url], Platforms, $Price-DemoOrTimedTrial)
use [size=6pt](dl)[/size] inside the URL tag if the only available link is a direct download, without a page
use [size=6pt](JP)[/size] inside the URL tag for a japanese site, or a corresponding abbreviation if the linked site is not in english

For People/Teams
[/b][url=http://site/]Name - Nickname[/url][/b]: Some games from them, no need for links, just to help recognizing

EDIT: The People category won't be shown until there are more entries

I think these would be good additions:
World of Goo (2D Boy, Windows/Mac/Linux/Wii, $20-Demo)
Machinarium (Amanita Design, Windows/Mac/Linux, $20-Demo)

(I just realized that Samorost and Samorost 2 are already on the list, so maybe Machinarium would be a little redundant)

Shoot the Bullet (Team Shanghai Alice(JP), PC) {Is there an official download link? I only seem to find it in file-sharing sites and I'm not sure if it's okay to link here}
I don't think there's an official download link - the reason you find it in file-sharing sites is that it's not freeware (see this to see where you can purchase Shoot the Bullet and other Touhou games).

Edit: Also, you can link to cactus's Games page directly through this link: http://cactusquid.com/games.htm

Would you count mount & blade, or not? They were indie, but have a publisher now and a studio...

@iffi

Thanks. I've updated Clean Asia and Shoot the Bullet. I'll add the others later (weekend at most), I don't have time to do it right now. There is no problem in suggesting more games from the same devs, there is a lot a already and we will pick a few to highlight.

The thread is kind of slow Sad I was expecting a lot more suggestions. I would add more but picking games for "The Indie List" by myself is kind of pretentious. Well, I only created it yesterday...

Knytt Stories isn't one game, you can't really say every single Knytt story is better than Knytt Shrug

I like the idea of an update of the original list. Like mentionned before a shorter list, maybe 25-30 games, would be more suiting. Especialy if they are not in another list.
Anyway, I heartly approve of this and I'll be keeping an eye out on this Smiley

Oh and yeah! Keep your "this game is indier you retard" to yourself, I don't want to have to lock this update topic Smiley  Gentleman

Minecraft, Amnesia, Spelunky, World of Goo, Machinarium, Canabalt, Passage, Braid, Limbo and Super Meat Boy definitively need to be up there Smiley A lot of nice games came out since the original list was made Smiley

The list could probably use another RPG.

Space Funeral
Teppoman 2 (more recent, and personally I dig it more than Nikujin)

Also,  a more concise list would be awesome.

I could start removing the games with less votes in the poll from the list. What do you think?
