Well, I've had to ban a couple of people now.  And as is to be expected, they proceeded to bitch and moan and attack me in a really passive aggressive manner after the ban.  I thought it was common sense that you don't post a shameless advert for yourself as your first post on a new forum?  Guess not.

In light of this, here's a rule guide so I have something I can point to next time I ban somebody.

1. DON'T SPAM YOUR GAME

What constitutes spam?  Surprisingly, posting about your game does not necessarily mean that you are spamming.  Here are a couple of ways you can tell us about your game without being a filthy, dirty little spammer:

1. Post your game in the Feedback forum, if you're looking for feedback to improve your game, or the Announcements forum for finished games, with a screenshot or two!

2. Introduce yourself in the Introduce Yourself thread!  Get involved in the community!  Prove that you're here for more than just advertising.  After we know a little bit about you, you can make a nice, personalized post about your game and why we might be interested.

Here is a great example of a first post that is most definitely spam:

Hi

Released last week.
[his website url appeared here]

The download is aprox 14mb and includes a free demo.

Cheers,

Mark.

Can you believe this guy had the balls to tell me afterwards that he was just posting his game here to get involved in the community?  And to get feedback for his game (even though he somehow failed to notice the fact that we have a forum for that very purpose)?

Fig 1. Spammers tend to be money-grubbing little liars who will post their game link on the underside of a toilet if they think there's a 0.0001% chance it could result in a sale of their game.

2. DON'T BE A TERRIBLE PERSON

If you are Adolf Hitler, a child pornographer, the creator of Cheetahmen II, or some other type of scum, then you can be banned for that.

Fig 2. M. Bison: generally considered to be a terrible, terrible person.

That's it, I think!  Help us promote creativity, a true passion for games, and a clean, healthy forum.  We can do it! Grin

Fig 3. Yay!

Yeah, all I can say to these assholes is fuck off. Advertise your game all you want, but only if it's:

1. free
2. bloody damn good

stop wasting my time with more shit games which i need to pay, thank you.

don't just ban them, put their games on a shit list and post it on the front page every week. that'll teach them.

Yeah guys! You're obviously new to this whole forum shilling thing, because posting about your game on arrival is a rookie mistake.

You've got to hit *atleast* 166 posts, full of content which butters up to fellow forumites before you start pimping your game hardcore. See, that's what you guys aren't capable of - leading people on, and making them think they're forming real friendships before blowing them out of the water, telling them you were a shill all the time. Your morals get the better of you and you chicken out, and if they don't find out from you directly (cos you're too chicken to tell them yourself) they call you a jerk, and don't wanna talk to you ever again, and you try to tell them "Sure, it started as a bet, but somehow, along the way, I found out that I love you." but they still think it's a lie.

And as you cry yourself to sleep over a love lost, there's... I dunno... some contrived scene where you stick up for this potential customer's downs syndrome brother who's being picked on by the school bully, and only THEN they buy your game. Trust me, I've been there and it's NOT WORTH THE BLOWJOBS.

You've got to learn not to get attached. After all, they're just a bunch of pimpley nerds on an interweb forum who you kinda wince to call your "audience".

I hope this helps.

it wouldn't hurt to post a couple of feedbacks for other member's games in the forums before advertising your SHIT and expecting some COMMENTS

And if your matching game is nowhere near as good as Blocksum then you can save the hassle by posting next year.

Except that oftentimes, people who make really poor games tend to think they are pretty good. And those that make good games are often very self-critical. You can't really judge your own work objectively; that's part of the whole "feedback" thing.

And do you really not like paying for games? I don't mind paying for games if I like them. And I don't mind people trying to make money from games, either. In fact, I would encourage it, since making money from games can sometimes be fashioned into some sort of ongoing career, whereas sticking to free games is something that is in danger of just petering out sometime after the university years are behind you.

People successfully profiting from their work is a great thing, and an excellent sign that you're not trapped in some increasingly insular, fringe cult scene like an Amiga demo coder. And it means that they can afford to do more of it.

I have to admit I've been pretty surprised at the stuff getting posted in 'stuff I want to see on TIGSource'. Surprised at how bold people are and surprised at just how many awful games there are out there. And how the idiot's spamming us seem to always make the worst games ever. I'm still laughing from the snowmobiling meets poker.

Also, massive win on the Mario ad.

Can't really blame people.

When you are a big company, you can tell everybody in the world to buy Diablo 2, even if it looked like shit in its first version. But when you are a small indie studio (or just a single hobbyst), you will have to do everything yourself and people still won't die to get your game, even if it's the best thing since sliced bread.
Of course if someone is making cheap attempts at guerilla marketing and then bitches that he was treated unfair, it's only his/her fault.
Still I don't believe that making "hey I'm Bob" post in the introduction thread and giving few "wow, cool" cooments to other games, would change anything.

Nah, you can totally blame people, in my opinion. Tongue

And I honestly have not really been taken with any of the games that I've seen spammed by their creators... whereas the games I've found interesting I've usually heard about from news sites or by word of mouth from other players.  Which leads me to believe that if a game is truly good, it doesn't have to resort to these kinds of cheap marketing tactics.

Okay, so let me rephrase it to: "you can blame people, but you can also understand their reasons" Wink.

I think you are right that most great games don't need that sort of cheap tricks to get to their audience, but on the other hand, if word of mouth would be enough, we would all be happy and rich.

Much depends on the tone and an overall "taste" of the message (at least for me). If someone takes his/her time to write a polite and descriptive post about his/her creation in "hey take a look at my game - maybe you'll like it" manner, then I think that everything is cool. After all there is no word of mouth until someone tells people that the game exists at all.
Heck, I've posted my game in that manner and I don't really feel wrong about that (but I apologise if you do).

Still if the creator is just spamming many different forums with: "take a look *link*" or even worse: "hey I'm not a dev for this really, but take a look *link*", then it's just cheap and plainly stupid. I know that indies have to assault many different websites, with many different sumbission systems/policies and I realise that it becomes no-brainer at some point, but c'mon...

It seems to me like a thread "about" a new game is relevent regardless of the post count, and my personal feeling on new people posting on a forum is that they ought to just jump in as if they were there all along--of course, in order to be convincing this requires a lengthy lurking period!

But really.  Your general forum description says "post interesting links/news," I can't think of anything more interesting than news or links regarding my own game! Wink

Haha, well you know, if you post your own game in that thread, that's totally fine.  I guess a lot of it is in the tone of your post, also.  Tell us about the game... don't treat it like you're selling us a used car.

I hear that. There are soo many people out there trying to promote their crappy games it is almost overbearing to listen to, if you have a good game it will get exposure eventually...
