I've seen the video on tinycartridge- glad to see you're one of us now! Can't wait for the demo! Once again, it is proven that all the best and only the best are Tiggers

Let me just echo everyone elses sentiment and say this looks lovely.
All I wish is that'd you'd come up with a new GUI that wouldn't stray from the games pixel ratio. It's probably hard but please try as currently it's an eyesore.
Good luck!

I don't really mind the HUD so much. I think it's well done. If you could come up with one that fits the resolution of the rest of the game, that would be awesome, but it's not really a flaw in my eyes. I remember how cool Metroid+H looked, and was really excited when I saw this on Tiny Cartridge. Can't wait to play it!

We didn't have much of a choice. The tiny rez makes it hard to get an HUD that doesn't take up an enormous amount of space, especially with max energy tanks & missiles. A traditional Metroid HUD might be smaller though..I'll mess around with it later.

You might be able to get away with making the energybars as wide as the pixels then using the actual resolution to scale them heightwise to match the level of health. (This is kind of like what it looks like now but without the outlines which is mainly what I find jarring right now). Try throwing on a three or four pixel font on this and see if its readable. I think it could look pretty good. Here's a three by three pixel font I made (and a site you could use to create your own): http://fontstruct.fontshop.com/fontstructions/show/pixeliteYou could probably find a lot of other tiny bitmap fonts. Hope that helps (and if you don't agree with me than just ignore my advice )

Hmm... funny, I can read both best at the lowest zoom factor (i.e. 1:1).

Maybe something as simple as this? It's pretty lacking in style, but you get the picture. Only one bar drains at a time, and "health" and "missiles" are easy enough to understand without any sort of labels, in my opinion.

Or how about just using numbers like in every actual Metroid game? In my opinion, it'd work the best. Something like this, maybe? The bright extensions to the BG bars would represent the additional energy / missile tanks. Though you probably wouldn't need those additional missile tank lines if you have a two-number display, now that I think of it...

Greetings fellow forumers, I'm AngryRobot/Beta, the second half of this project.
My part in this is mostly graphical, talking about sprites, enemy design, the HUD, and the backgrounds (as well as some parts of Samus.)
We're aware there's an issue with the HUD's readability, and we'll certainly address it. Thank you for your input.
