Good point!  And words are a lot more creatively stimulating than other media too:

"The great green man had seven cat-eyes in the middle of his forehead and wielded a sickle in each hand."

You just envisioned that scary-looking fellow, in a way different from every other person who's read the above passage before you.  Imagine if everyone's mental image was printed on paper; that could be a great deal of newly-created information.

What's better than writing?

GRAPHIC DESIGN Well, hello there!

Images combine with words to a greater effect than the sum of the mere part

Just because two mediums are being combined does not necessitate the final product be better than it would have been in either medium alone.

There are some paintings that strike me with raw, indefinable emotions and adding text would not help them. There are some books I never want to see with pictures because it would destroy the way I imagine them. Sometimes things are best simple.

Graphic design is not JUST the combination, it's the alchemy. A change in typography (graphic) can change the tone of a text. Comic's rendering of onomatopoeic sound can convey more than the word it display. The absence of word in an image where it could have been put is also powerful. There is a lot of subtle way to play with this, word have a graphic counterpart, ALL CAPS IN FORUM IS ANOTHER WAY TO USE GRAPHICAL POWER OF WORD.

Aha.  But we're (or at least I am) talking about words, not text.  Be sure to recognize the distinction.

 Facepalm You got me

EDIT:
But we still have symbol which sit into the vacuum between word (signification) and image (graphical depiction).

What about music? You have to write (some of) that, so you get the specific ability to compactly describe and the ability of audio to produce strong emotions.
