So i need ideas for things that could go in a spooky forest. It may be anything, from lightposts to undead fairies. One thing though: it must be a background or foreground embellishment. nothing that directly affects the game. Ideas?

Bones and skulls of dead animals. Old broken chariot\car, whatever in your game. Dead trees, garbage(carcass) with flies. Old abandond shack or wooden structure, could have a lumber axe with blood on it.
Hmm... depends how much you are willing for it to be out of place. For instance, I wouldn't imagine a lamp post inside of a forest. So I guess we are missing context.

Someone's never read The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe.

mildew in unhealthy colors all over the place; undead animals - skeleton rabbits or zombie deers that eat rotten meat; old trees that collapse in dust when somebody passes by; at the border of the forest normal birds that fly over the border fall dead to the ground; animals with mutations or deformations (papilloma-like proliferation...)
i like two spooky themes for forests: 1. the überdead old ancient gray forest with ghosts and skeletons. no life - only death and brittle remains... 2. forest hell with mutants, deformities and carnivore vegetation. a source of evil growth. everything always comes back to life (maybe with some added features). fresh wounds instantly jitter because of maggots and bugs that dig into the body...

Also I think that sometimes, the least creepiest things can start becoming CREEPIEST things. I mean, look at the animal friends on South Park. One minute they're cute and cuddly, and the next minute....well, you know.

Tombstones. Lots and lots of tombstones. One's spooky enough as it is.

Having yellow eyes in the shadows that melt away when you get near is a classic.

One tombstone, and one tombstone only.
A bat.
A bunch of water.
