I had a change of heart about the texture style of the characters (and by extension the environments), in an attempt to prevent myself from getting too detail-obsessed. I redid the Healer trying to keep things as simple as possible. I think if I keep everything at this level as detail, I can cut my texturing time in half at least. It may not be as interesting as the old texture, but i'm hoping it's more iconic and readable. What do you guys think? It's pretty similar to the untextured version I posted a while back, but the difference here is that the lighting is baked into the diffuse texture now.

I really loved the designs on August before, but this looks okay. Just not as great, nor memorable. Keeping the back at least would be nice.

Okay, I put some of the details back in (sweater lines, zipper, back design). This is probably a good balance between the two extremes.

I think she looked better without the design on her back.
Second character is flawless, though.

Yeah, I think the design on her back is too detailed for the rest of the design, maybe?

It's a he actually, although I understand how you can make the mistake, they all look rather feminine. It doesn't really matter in the context of the gameplay or story, so I guess people are free to interpret their sex any way they want.
Since the player will mostly be looking at the characters backs during battles, the design is mainly just to break up the space and make it a bit more visually interesting. Once I have all the characters in game I may go back and simplify the design if it's too detailed to clearly make out or stands out in a bad way.
Thanks for the comments everyone!

I started writing a first pass of the game text. Here is the intro text:
"Four spirits of purest worth, Seek the prize of the Black One's hearth.
Archer, fighter, healer, mage, Each with a key to unlock the cage.
What sets them apart shall be their test, Those who don't listen will be laid to rest."
All the in-game text will follow this format. It should be a fun challenge for the tutorial text!

Great. You have made me feverishly want to drop everything I'm doing and make a 3D game.

What are you going to do now that they've introduced a 13th sign?

What are you going to do now that they've introduced a 13th sign? Arg, 12 divided so nicely by 4! Now I'll have to add 1/4 of a new character i guess???

I'm happy to say that a programmer friend of mine has agreed to help me out with the project! I'm excited because he's super talented and (almost more importantly) very easy to work with. I don't know if this will decrease the overall development time however, as like me he only has a few hours a week to devote to the project, but the end result should be more stable and feature-rich, at least.
