I've noticed more than a few excellent artist types here lamenting that this new compo isn't for them because they aren't a programmer.  While it's true that writing a game that uses procedural content as well as playing well, etc is a hefty coding challenge, I think it would be awesome if this were also an opportunity for the community of visual and sound artists here to dabble in procedurally generated art as well.

I'm going to post some inspiration, resources, and general awesomeness that I've discovered so that people here can take a look and go, "Hmm, that is in fact awesome - maybe I can do that?"

So, side challenge!  If you're not up for writing an entire game that uses procedural content generation, why let that stop you from the fun?  Experiment with writing software that draws cool stuff!  Or makes weird sound collages!  Or both!

Resources
Processing - a fantastic super-accessible coding language and environment designed for visual artists.
Generator.x - a blog and conference on generative art from around the world.  They also have a Flickr pool that is full of goodness.

Ooh, I want to try!

This'll give me an excuse to learn Processing an' actually try coding something for realz.  Never really tried programming, but hey! gotta start somewhere.

I made these a couple of years ago.

Also i was doing a collaboration with a photographer friend of mine, me doing some procedural generation stuff based on his photo which resulted in this.

That freezer-burned photo is pretty cool.

Added some more stuff to the top post, including links to a couple of things I coded myself.  Which I highlight not because they're the best stuff you'll ever see, but because you can also find source code there to learn from. Smiley

Although, if you try out Processing, it has TONS of sample programs that you can learn from (and which also generally look pretty cool on their own).
