Not sure about the colors...
a bit (way) dark there, and the spikes are practically invisible, as well as the swinging blades'...arm things.

I agree on the spikes thing. I didn't notice them until Xion mentioned them, and even then I was like, "Spikes? What spikes? Ooohhh, thoooose spikes..." I like the way the whole thing looks a lot though, and I'm not sure I agree on the "too dark" or the swinging-arms comment. I don't disagree though, either. But those spikes should definitely be more apparent.

Generally thing in the foreground (plat-formers and obstacles) are more saturated.
To get a desaturated color, just add a tiny percentage of the color's complementary counterpart.

Playing with a 4-color grey-scale palette that Kramlack created for another game.

Also a monster thingy with weird muscle anatomy...

um so I'm sorry I have no sprites to contribute, but I just found this:

http://silkmilk.tumblr.com/post/1107350072

someone tumbled a piece someone on this forum made, and it's huge..

I dunno if the original artist knows or not, or if the poster was the original artist, but I saw it and thought it was kinda funny.

Here's a base for a graphical roguelike character.

Facial expressions will probably reflect gameplay-relevant character states. The pictured ones could represent a fighting stance or general adventuring approach (balanced, defensive/cautious, offensive/reckless).

.
This has had no attention so I thought I'd amend that.

There are a few anatomical issues here and while I'm no pro on the subject I'll still advise you to try and fix them. So to start, the legs/feet don't look attached to the body and they also give the impression that the character should be facing directly right. Whatever that is on his chest looks like a moustache, on a sprite that size try not to go over detailed, you'll be covering that with clothes anyway. The head looks weird with how its attached to the body, that might be because of that straight line directly under it. Maybe try and introduce a bit of a neck? within that line though. Crotch could use fixing up too..  Well, hello there!
