I've given up trying to be creative and have starting developing the most video-gamey game of all time. It's called VaniaVaniaVaniaVaniaVania. It plays like a mix Metroid and Castlevania. Here are all the sprites. EAT IT UP SHEEPLE.
Give it an extra "Vania" and you got a VVVVVV ripoff. Well, hello there!

In other news, I whipped up a couple more for some reason.

Another one on top of that would show Terry Cavanagh who's boss. It's now called VaniaVaniaVaniaVaniaVaniaVaniaVania.
These are all absolutely gorgeous. Loving that simple style.
Thankies.

When I found out that the ds can emulate DOS with dsx86 (with the power of a 286...), I immidiatly began trying out DOS programming on it, and it works! So now I intend to make games on the go. I want to make a very retro Amiga-ish game. I'm thinking something like a Gods metroidvania maybe?

Anyway, here's my character for it Well, hello there!
Was using Gods screens for reference.
I used a random "cool word" generator to suggest game names... I'm going with Xercule Droop

Yin , that character picture is mostly great but I feel theres some areas you would need to look at again...

i - his arm closest to the viewer , the muscles seem wrong. I dont see how it connects to the elbow and lower part of the arm.

ii - the hand holding the sword seems off as well, the shading/shadow suggests to me the hand is turned at a 45 degree angle, but the sword is at more of a 30 degree angle. The angle the hand is suggesting and the sword is at are different.

iii - the pose is rather bland , put some roses in the hand and it would work equally well... I would suggest changing it so he is pointing the sword at a imaginary foe in front of him, and changing the free arm to open handed.

Bare in mind it is just an opinion, and the actual artwork is good I just felt the above mentioned points needed addressing.

I felt point 1 and 3 was part of the retro thing. I made the pose bland/awkward on purpose (and with the possibility of just adding a shield on top of the second arm), and for the muscles I was just like... "Screw it, I'll just do them somewhat randomly and it'll fit with the style"
Bad excuses, I know.

I'll work on the hand though, it does look more rotated than the sword. Gentleman

I thought it looked okay Yin.

Um, I got a new computer 'cos my old one died, but it doesn't have Paint on it! So it'll be a week 'til I get some pixel art up, I'm sure I'll find some program for it (I plan on looking through this very forum for one).

I used paint until I got Windows 7. Now I use GraphicsGale, which is excellent and I'd recommend.

GraphicsGale is the best, yes. Some people will also recommend ProMotion.

Using Paint for pixel-art is blegh

I use MSpaint for pixel art.

And a crappy usb mouse to draw.

I live in the mid 90's apparently.

Paint is fine, in my opinion. Well, it was until the Windows 7 version Concerned

Paint can gets the job done, albeit slowly and somewhat, uhm... unintuitively, let's say? Other programs have benefits like improved UIs, more tools, hotkeys, palette options, what-have-you. Good stuff that, while not essential, undeniably speeds up and facilitates the whole process.

Also, 3 undos is just not enough.  Tongue

Darken, that looks very pretty. Personally, I think the trees are lovely the way they are and not too noisy. However, I feel like the ground should be a bit darker and with more details to fit with the very complex grass and trees.

My one note would be that all that black at the bottom is just wasted space.  Will you but the HUD down there or something?

Yes actually. The idea is to make a black area for the hud at the bottom but make the bottom of the ground blend in with it (the fore grass being one example).
