I've already shown this to the guys on the #tigIRC channel, but I thought I'd share it here too.  First, some background info.  The game I'm making is with someone who has made over 40 games in the past.  He has a recurring character named Big C.  I'll introduce him to you.  Check the lower-left of each of these images.  He's the rotund dude with the orange jumpsuit and poofy hair:





And here's a closeup of him:



Alright, so I had to animate this guy within 14 pixels of space (16 total, but with a black outline).  Here's the result:



And since I'm posting, I might as well include the princess, who is also in that UFO picture above:



EDIT:
I also want to say, I'd like to create a separate thread about animation.  But this thread already has so much animation, I'm not sure if that'd be ok with everyone else to separate it.

very rarely do i get excited about a game based of visuals alone.  but, you sir have me hooked Smiley

that puppy is already on my most-wanted list.

now, just guarantee me that the gameplay is going to be ace beyond ace, and i'll be happily in gaming heaven :D

I was trying to do a (8x8 pixels) tileset the other day and build a shooter around it but I did not come too far with it. Logo and the ships look awful, too.

I suppose it must be fun to build a game for such a small screen size though.

Most of your tiles have a similar texture, just different colors. Instead of just dotting everything with high and lowlights, try to detail more specific textures. Sand has undulating dunes. Grass has grain. The generic water tile is close to what you want, but the three pixel wave you've got repeated is a little meh for my tastes. You can also shift the detail in your sprites from inside the lines to on top of the outlines. Use different colored outlines to show highlights/lowlights.
