Its unnecessary and it clashes with the rest of the chunkier, more traditional gfx.  A good style-dither would work better than a straight gradient.  Plus straight gradients automatically mean you're using an artificial and less interesting color ramp than you could be otherwise, and one that ignores a lot of the rules about how light actually hits objects, etc.  E.g. your gradient could use hues of blue or red as it goes from purple to black, and it would look a lot more interesting than the little mask+gradient tool thing thats in there now!

good point.
well, we recently figured out a little technical detail that suddenly allowed me to use a lot more colors than before. i used to try and limit myself to 3-4 colors per objects, but now i can go wild.
so i tried this little gradient thing.
ill give it some more work.

oh and by the way, this is my first time using pixel-art for a game.
so yeah, bear with me.

I think the evil statue is too saturated and its mouth needs smoothing a little. I think the darker floating block is OK personally, but you might try reducing its contrast slightly or desaturating it a little to go a bit better with the regular blocks you have in use. I'm not sure I agree with the other guys about the gradient, I think it's fine but I'm not really an artist Smiley But it seems like this is set in the sky so the colours should be washed out and bleached a bit because of that.

Will the cloud shadows be moving across the whole show? because you will win big if so Smiley

yup.
thats the plan.

also, i have a serious issue with colors.
i can spend WEEKS just tweaking colors.
i've done it before.
im never happy.

so all those colors will have the shit tweaked out of them before long.

Second rev! Done all sorts of tidying up, slimming, pee-removing and stuff. And now she has a nose and everything! Still looks somewhat weird to me though, but I can't see exactly what it is. Ah well, I probably will tomorrow. This pixel pushing business is very addictive!
Oh, and since you guys love gradients so much, I've added some of them too.

Any thoughts?

Oh, and fish. I like where your stuff is heading! Good stuff. I wish I had it in me to do things like that. I seem to only have the patience of painting or whatever if it has to do with women. It's the damn sexist in me, I think.

The reflection still needs to, y'know, reflect. At the moment it's reflecting a pair of legs where the lighting is completely different.

If you take away the reflection, it looks like she has two stumps for legs.

Well, here are a few tips:

The reflection is understood now, but it's still showing off how little you know about reflections Sad

You can get rid of a few of those black lines. The one I'm thinking about is the one separating her knee from the water. It might look better.

The eyes need more shadows.

Shadows in general will be your friend in making this look better. Give her clothes texture with different shading techniques than her skin. Add more shadows on her leg to show form.

Here's something a little in depth about the water:

Get realy close to a ripple. Get a glass of water, fill it up, and drip drops on it. The surface of the water is like a wave (because it is) rotated around a central point (because it's that, too) with a lot of interference with other waves (and again). You know how to draw a wave, so you know where highlights and shadows start on waves. Imagine a 2D image and put that on a ribbon, then rotate it. Stuff like that.

Um, you have a mirror, right?

You just need to flip the bottom part of the leg graphics upside-down, compensate slightly for the change in perspective and then do the displacement to make them look like they're being reflected by an uneven surface.

Yeah how come the shading on the reflected legs is different from the real legs??

Also the plain red background with the bar across it looked 500000 times better than these gradients!!  bring back the plain and bold!

First extensive pixelling I've done in a year. Was fun though. Proportions are off I know, but realism ain't my thing.
