Myriad Online is a commercial indie MMORPG that has been in development for 10 months. I am looking for a dedicated, high quality pixel artist to work with.

Position Overview:
Applicants must be able to stay dedicated to the project, must be able to deliver unique work, and must have a good sense of design. This is a long term paid position and a serious commercial project.

I will be working on this game for many years to come, and while asking the same of potential artists might be a bit much, the most important trait I am looking for in an applicant is someone who can truly stay dedicated to the game.

Technical Requirements:
  • High quality pixel art skills (on par with this example)
  • Strong design in a variety of fields (characters, tiles, architecture, limited animation)
  • Deliver 5+ sprites per week

Other Requirements:
  • Decent English communication skills
  • Dedication
  • 18+ years of age

Why This Project:
If you have worked in a team of any size before, you'll know they tend to fall apart more often than not. I am developing an MMORPG. That's not a joke project, or a beginners crazy fantasy -- it's a real project.

I am dedicated to making this project a commercial success. I have spent years getting to the required skill level to actually make an online game. The game is already well into production, and I have had previous experience with online projects. I am always willing to learn whatever new skills are required to advance.

Unfortunately, I have very limited artistic skills. I've practiced pixel art myself on occasion, with the hopes of improving -- and I have. The problem is, I can see that it would take years to get to any decent quality, time better spent programming, in my case.

That's where you come in. If you're looking to work with someone who is truly committed to his project, look no further. I can offer you a project that will be here with you as long as you want it there. You will even make some money along the way.

Payment:
Now, this is a tricky. On one hand, I want an artist that isn't applying for the money, but for the project itself. On the other, offering a personal investment might prove to the right person that this is a serious project.

As an indie developer, I'm by no means rich (yet!), but I am happy to put whatever funds I can spare into the project. I am willing to pay for sets of completed sprites at a negotiable price, or we can discuss other possibilities.

While the game is pre-beta, I have a budget of around $200 per month for the game, so work on the art can be taken at a fairly relaxed pace. After this point the budget will increase and so will the workload.

About Me:
My name's Matthew, and I am an independent game developer from Australia. I've spent the past 5 years teaching myself how to program games, with the goal of being able to develop an MMORPG as my day job. How do I spend my days? When I'm not earning a wage, fulfilling social commitments, or sleeping: I make my MMORPG. Goal achieved? Well not quite, I'd like to earn a living from it too!

My previous projects have been amazing learning experiences. My last one being an online project I worked on for nearly 12 months. When I finally decided to move on, I knew I was ready to start work on my dream project, a commercial MMORPG. For the past 10 months, that's what I've been working on. Even now I'm still learning new designs and concepts. Just like an MMORPG, my pool of knowledge never stops growing!

Game Concepts:
I hate MMORPGs. To be more precise, I hate what developers have done with the idea of an MMORPG, a genré with so much potential. Myriad Online is a 2D MMORPG that is currently in development. The game plays out in 3/4 view and will feature many unique systems and concepts to make it stand out.

  • Exploration based gameplay, less solo questing.
  • Reactive world complete with global influence and fame systems.
  • Interactive environment which reacts to element types.
  • A detailed combat system featuring mind-blowing spells.
  • Brutal PvP based world and harsh consequences for death.

In particular, I really want to explore the potential of player control. Players will be given the opportunity to achieve immense power. Progression is based around earning power, through many different means. What they choose to do with it is the interesting part. They might choose to cast a spell that decimates an entire city, but at what cost to themselves? I believe offering such potential for control in an MMORPG is the game's biggest draw card.

Gameplay is exploration and combat based. I don't like grinding, it's just not fun. While some sort of grind is a necessity in any game, I want gameplay to be both fun and unique. After all, a 2D indie MMORPG has to stand out somehow, right?

With Myriad Online, I plan to take the most unrefined and unimaginative parts of major MMORPG's and shape them into something special.

Development:
This project is well into development (10 months as of 1/1/2011) with many systems already coded, and strong infrastructure design. I am currently in the process of converting the old server into C++ which is progressing much quicker than expected (I spent much of 2010 learning C++).

Progress has been a little slower during 2010 than I hoped, but I have cleared up a lot of other distractions and commitments so that I can put even more time into this project during 2011.

Application:
If you have managed to get this far, I'd love to hear from you. Please email me at:

Examples of your pixel art skills or general art skills are necessary. Any additional information you'd like to provide is welcome.

Closing:
Thank you for reading about this position. I look forward to hearing from you.
