THE EL GATO
A danmaku/bullet hell inspired game.  No relationship to the 1993 comic book.

Platform: Windows, OpenGL 3.0 (or 2.1 with FBO extension)

It's going to be about a flying cat, maybe.  It'll mix strategic elements into a shmup - featuring resource gathering to build power and defend yourself.  I don't want to set anything in stone now though so ... anything could happen!  I just wanted to share my progress with people in this topic.

JANUARY 13

First short test.  It features a fight to the death with a personality that's near and dear to us...

Controls:
  Arrowkeys to move
  A to shoot

Download

This playable has nothing to do with what I'm thinking the final game will have.  I was just using these elements for testing and decided to put something with a beginning and end together for other people to play.

I'm working on the game concept on paper, but it's really messy and I want to test some ideas out first before I talk about what the game will actually be about.

JANUARY 13, THAT EVENING
I lowered the boss's HP so it takes less time to kill him. Also, now, after you beat him the game spits out a file called performance.txt with an average of the various benchmarks I'm taking. If you can copy and paste the contents of that here, you'll receive rare candy!*

*Rare candy will not be sent

It makes me think of how "The La Brea Tar Pits" means "The The Tar Tar Pits"

Hey guys, I updated the thing - if you can play it and beat the boss (lower HP now) and copy/paste the contents performance.txt in a reply here, good things will surely come to you!  At least, I'll thank you in a most gentlemanly manner.

Oh yeah and a simple computer spec would be nice.  Sorry, I wanted to make it put that in there automatically but it's a lot of work.

Example:  Windows 7 / AMD Phenom II 550 4-core 3.3ghz 4GB / ATI Radeon 5750 1GB

Have you by any chance read Runaways by Brian K Vaughan?

Let me be the first to actually make a comment about the game, by saying that it doesn't run on my computer (windows XP, crappy hardware).
It just doesn't launch and throws an error message.

As someone who doesn't play a lot of bullet hell games, all I can say to this is AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

But how are you supposed to dodge the blue spirally blasts? Anyway, great music and a cool game.

Edit: Where did you get the music anyway? It's really really cool and very close to what I had in mind for the game I'm working on right now.

Those blue bullets in the 2nd attack mode have hitboxes that are only 1 pixel.  Your ship's hitbox is also just 1 pixel, or maybe 2x2, I can't remember.  So it's actually possible to dodge them, you just have to play a little mental game of probability and seek out areas with the fewest bullets.

It's the boss music from Chrono Trigger!  Gentleman
