See? it's like... if you've never done networking before, why not make an awesome two player versus game?

That is true. I just want more games that people can interact through in person.

EDIT: Yes this is a joke post

EDIT EDIT: Wait, actually I'm confused. Are you actually suggesting we defer beginning development until the 18th?

Question about the wording:
Quote
For the TIGSource Versus Compo, the rules are simple: make a game that is about one human player versus at least one other human player. The rest (genre, online/offline, etc.) is up to you.
Does that mean players can't be on teams?  I get that people have to be competing, but are players restricted to be on their lonesome?

Solid question. I think that definitely should be clarified.

Yeah, that seems restrictive. I'll change it a bit.

But then, what exactly is the theme? If it's just to make a multiplayer game that is not cooperative, it seems way too broad and becomes kind of boring.

Well, yeah. That's apparently the whole idea. It's about people making competitive multiplayer games. So yeah, you can't make purely co-op games (though I'll just say you can make it team-based, but there needs to be competition).

I doubt it'll turn boring. There's way too much creativity and crazy concepts around here already.

You could make a co-op game where players secretly try to screw each other over.

Yeah, no, I don't doubt that people will make great stuff. I just think that "non-cooperative multiplayer" is a criteria that covers a good half of all the games out there and the games that Derek used as inspirations are very unique in that they really provide a sense of head to head competition and that to me is ultimately a more interesting restriction than just "multiplayer".
