A small scale MMO(100-1000 users depending on memory usage) focused on PVP. Players will fight for control of towers on the map which give the controlling faction bonuses, extra speed, extra strength, etc. The two factions will be humans and rogue robots in a sci-fi setting.

We are currently looking for an artist to help on the project.

Progress:
-users can connect to server
-users can move around a void
-chat messaging semi-working

You do realise the load of such scale, and that it is not small at all?

DO NOT BE DISCOURAGED THO, mate!!!

I'm saying that you need some extreme optimisations if you want to be able to handle such load, e.g. doing most things (or prefferably everything) P2P.

Well we are going to check the strain on the server to decide how many users we will allow at once, but do to the simplicty, something like Realm of the Mad God ( http://www.realmofthemadgod.com/ ) we are very optimistic about the number of player we can handle at once.
And to answer Daniel's question, if fewer people join, it'll be fine. 100-1000 will be the cap, depending on the strain.

That's not really true. It really depends on the type of game and on the optimisations, but at least from what I now (Planeshift), I think it's certainly possible. It's not like he would need ten servers for 1000 people. One 2-core or 4-core cpu + few gigs of RAM is enough. If it's for 100 people then even average desktop computer could run it. But as I said at the beginning it all depends on the game, netcode and optimizations.
