Quick update to show I'm still working on the game.

I've gotten sick recently, so work has slowed down, but I'll try to keep going.

I was about to post that, haha. Agreed, man! I would hate to see your health go down because of this. Relax, for a bit! You already work crazy fast.

A small update to what I'm doing right now-

Tower cranes are cool

And so are robots

I'd put up a new updated demo, but I'm having big trouble with some code, so it's kind of unsafe to play right now.
I've asked a question about how to fix it in the GML questions thread a few days ago, but so far I haven't gotten an answer back. Hopefully I can get this problem fixed soon.

I'll try to post some new game music whenever I can, as well.

Some serious love being pumped into this one. It looks absolutely fantastic, and it plays nice. Some tweaks on the gameplay (A bit stale at the moment) and I wish it would've been released on Game Boy Advance back in the day so I could buy it.

Ah, the gameplay is a little bland right now, but that's because I haven't updated this demo in a while. I've made a bunch of changes since then.
Thank you for the comment, though.

LOOK PLANTS

So, I finally got this current demo up to a point that I'm ok with.
These plants aren't in the game yet, I just wanted to post a picture so that this isn't just me posting replies to myself.

Check the first post to get the new updated demo.

Please notify me of any problems you find.

edit: now that I'm not half-asleep, I'll list all the new features I can remember:
  • Redone a couple of the backgrounds
  • fixed a LOT of glitches involving Jack's movement
  • fixed a lot of glitches involving enemies
  • added new stages
  • added a tutorial

and I think that's all of it for now.

Nice, I finally got around to playing through the rest of the demo. Here's the full list of videos...

Part 3 [Current Demo] (Up to Third boss)
Part 4 [Current Demo] (Remainder of demo)

The level titles were messed up for me in the new videos, but I think that was probably just a side-effect of me playing the new demo with a save file from the old demo.

Also, the game doesn't seem to save after you beat the 3rd boss.

WOAH WOAH WOAH, stop stop!

You said you loaded a save from the old demo?

I started watching the first video and I noticed that this is basically still the previous demo that you're playing in these videos!
I'm sorry, but you have to start a new save file. somehow, loading a previous save has reverted the game.

When you start a new game, it should ask you if this is your first time playing.

Also... I'm still not happy at all about how fast the game plays on your computer. You did watch my framerate video, right?

Sorry, I should have explained that better. The first two videos are the old videos, which are from the original demo. The last two videos are the new demo. I edited the post to make it more clear Smiley

Also, I double checked, and the way I originally had the recorder set up, it was capturing frames at a slightly slower rate than real-time. Therfore, the video was playing back at almost double the speed of the game. Part 3 and Part 4 are recorded using a better codec, so they should be pretty much 100% accurate to how the game is running on my computer.

Ahh, whew, that a relief!
Im glad to see the game playing at normal speed once again.

Please start a new save, though. it's still causing problems with your game. not only the level titles being obscured, but the fact that two new stages aren't even showing up for you.

Also, you completely bypassed the tutorial.

I will be relieved when I'm done with these blasted cave stages.
They're getting really boring to me.

Not that the stages are boring! It's just getting tedious to build them.

Looks pretty exiting, right?

I can honestly say that this part of the game has made me exert the most effort. I'm still not done either.

Also, why not, have some more music... cave music.
I'm still going for an SNES feel for these songs, so I'll list the inspirations as well.
The game goes back and forth between happy/serious, and the caves are part of the more serious side. So I guess that's why working on them has gotten me down. The atmosphere is different. there's no sun, no happy enemies, just darkness with hints of light and construction machinery and bats... and rocks. depressing rocks.

"Into the Darkness, We Wander" -the normal cave theme
http://www.mediafire.com/?03qi97378bl5d68
Inspired by the music of Act Raiser and Chrono Trigger

"Unsettling Echoes" -the dark cave theme
http://www.mediafire.com/?0khokpfn0q7aevc
Inspired by the music of Super Metroid and Donkey Kong Country

I figured I should post something. Just so you know I'm still hard at work.

Wow, those look epic, and sound good too!
Also am I weird that I felt nostalgic when I hear the first tune? Droop Must be the similiraty with Chrono Trigger!

Good luck with the project, I hope to hear more.
PS: Second theme is very creepy, I like that. Sounds like "Misty Menace" from Donkey Kong Country!

Caves don't have to be disinteresting. You could always throw in a bunch of glowy blue crystals, interesting stalagmite/stalactite formations or maybe some lovely waterfalls in the back.

As a side note, 'Into the Darkness, We Wander' is damn awesome. So catchy.

Ah, thanks, you two! I appreciate it!

Nostalgia is the main thing I want you to have when you listen to this music and play this game.

As for what you said, McMutton. I was planning on making a big glowing Geode in the backgrounds of some stages, but that waterfall idea is great! I think I'll add that, too!

Cave music sounds kind of Celtic to me, but it also reminds me of Super Metroid, even though the 2nd song sounds more similar to Metroid-style.

You have some serious skills... if only I could just think about a game and make... everything for it...  WTF
