Tract: A Game of Obese Proportions

GENRE: Metroidvania action/platform/adventure.

SYNOPSIS: When Smithy, a relatively intelligent baby, is swallowed by an incredibly obese lady, it's up to him and.... no one else to escape the clutches of the lady's incredibly large and exaggerated digestive system!

CONCEPT ART:

(from left to right: Smithy, final boss, obese lady)

DEVELOPMENT STARTS: Now.

YOU CAN HELP BY:
  • Coming up with ideas. I'm a hard-core amateur (not in the pornographic way) and I like to have as many people in on the development fun as possible.
  • I may need programming help in the future, so when that time comes around I'll ask for specific things.
  • I also need pixel animators to help with the sprite animation.

I totally thought you were just kidding around. But this is hilarious.

(oh and by the way, I'm pretty sure the baby had a stick body in Smithy's dream)

"Psychoanalzye THIS!" is a good name. Has an "indie" kind of ring to it. Then again, I'm bad with names so it probably sucks.

Isn't there a game naming thread in one of these forums?

A bit too close to Analyze This isn't it?

Never heard of "Analyze This," but yeah it does seem too close.

Basic movement and collision is down. No animation. Screen change implemented.

The character acts really weird when jumping up into the ball, in case you didn't know.

"Psychoanalyze this" is fine, and I don't think there could be problem with that movie (just my uninformed opinion).

Psychoanalyze This, to me sounds far too much like Analyze This. I had assumed Smithy was referring to the movie in his original post. As a title it also requires the player to understand a lot of the story behind the game, which makes it a little in-joke-y, clique-y, DigiPen-y. I think the game would be better if it could appeal just as well to those outside Tigsource as those inside it.

How about we name it Tract, as in digestive tract? It describes the game literally while at the same time being completely misleading. I imagine people playing a level or two and then going "Oh, I get it, Tract."

There are so many possibilities here. Baby Smithy makes his way into her appendix, fights some sort of appendix monster and kills it. Meanwhile, on the outside world, the lady suddenly gets appendicitis and needs to be rushed to the hospital for an operation. Suddenly, Smithy has to fight a bunch of antibiotics and sleepy drugs that enter her system, like in that legendary "eat fuzzy, get dizzy" level in Yoshi's island, and eventually a giant scalpel boss that crashes through the 'ceiling.'

Suddenly, I feel like watching Eraserhead, for some reason.

aahhahaha smithy your ideas are brilliant..

i always imagine this looking sort of like the Pirate baby's cabana battle street fight, with kinda like lo-fi awesome pixel work maybe even monochrome.. but animated awesomely.

ive always kind of had a thing against flash games, if only because of the nature of how vector art looks, and the soft of hackish, awkward, quality that AS games tend to have.. but please prove me wrong. either way im looking forward.

Are you using AS2 or 3?

I'm afraid I might not blow your mind, I'm not exactly experienced. I did get a game featured on the Newgrounds front page, for what it's worth.

I'd love to have well-animated pixel graphics (monochrome? probably not, I prefer color) but I don't exactly have any pixel animation talent whatsoever so if anyone wants to pitch in I will let them.

AS2, because I plan to submit this to Wii homebrew website WiiCade as I have done with past projects so you can play Tract on your TV screen.

EDIT: BTW, Tract is a great name, and I'm gonna use it, but maybe we should have a subtitle? I was thinking something along the lines of "A Game Of Obese Proportions". Thoughts?

EDIT 3: Ooh lookie!

---

EDIT 2: ENGINE TEST TWO.

Added in crawling/walking engine.

KNOWN BUGS:
-Standing while under a low ceiling is messed up.
-Actually, pretty much everything involving collision with ceilings is messed up.

If you're a Flash/ActionScript person and would like to help solve these bugs, PM me for the source.

I too prefer pixel art over vector art, but that doesn't mean we can't use flash - just look at Dino Run.
Also, I like the idea of "A Game of Obese Proportions".
As for levels/areas, how about this: A level set in the woman's lungs. Because she's a chain-smoker, there are pits of tar to jump over and clouds of noxious gas to avoid. Perhaps you can walk through them for a while but once your oxygen runs out, you start taking damage.
Also, there is a constant wind blowing back and forth due to her breathing in and out. the wind affects you and the smoke clouds, so you have to use it to your advantage, a bit like in Bonesaw.
the boss is a giant robot that emerges from the tar and has twin flamethrowers shaped like cigarettes.
I also thought there could be a heart level which expands and contracts with the woman's heartbeat, and a stomach level with rising and falling levels of food. this could end with the food/acid constantly rising because the woman is vomiting. But since your objective is to escape from the body, this would have to either happen at the end of the game, or have something else happen to stop the baby from escaping along with the vomit (maybe he gets spirited away by a boss?)
Anyway, feel free to use these ideas or ignore them. Either way I'm looking forward to the finished product.

Letting go of the jump button before the character reaches the peak of its jump makes it suddenly begin to drop.

Holding down the jump button will make the character jump again when it touches the ground.

I don't know if that's a glitch.
It's kind of a standard in platformers. Same deal in Mario/Metroid/Megaman/etcetera.
